Abstract

Social media is not only used for communications and interactions, but also for self-expression and self-image. One of social media that currently being used is TikTok. The purpose of this study is to know the motivations from the Students of Broadcasting 2017 Mercu Buana university in playing TikTok. The theory used is the uses and gratification which assumes that the audience has psychological and social needs. At the end, makes the people choose the media they want to use and the messeage suggested by Denis McQuail and friends consists of the audience’s needs for the function of the media in get information, personal identity, social interaction and entertainment. The type of this study is descriptive of quantitative. This study used a survey method with questionnaire as an instrument for data collection. The population in this study is the Students of Broadcasting 2017 Mercu Buana University with a sample of 54 respondents and taken by purposive sampling. Overall, based on Likert scale calculations, the main motive that makes the Students of Broadcasting 2017 Mercu Buana University playing TikTok is the need for entertainment, which is 85%. And based on the highest mean score, the entertainment dimension is 4,11. Keywords : Social Media, Uses and Gratification Theory, Motivation. Media sosial tidak hanya digunakan sebagai alat untuk berkomunikasi dan berinteraksi, melainkan juga sebagai alat ekspresi diri dan pencitraan diri. Salah satu jenis media sosial yang sedang ramai digunakan oleh khalayak kali ini adalah TikTok. Adapun tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui motivasi para Mahasiswa/i Broadcasting 2017 Universitas Mercu Buana dalam bermain TikTok. Teori yang digunakan ialah uses and gratification yang mengansumsikan bahwa khalayak memiliki kebutuhan secara psikologis maupun sosial yang pada akhirnya membuat seseorang memilih media yang hendak digunakan dan pesan disarankan oleh Denis McQuail dan kawan-kawan yang terdiri atas kebutuhan khalayak terhadap fungsi media dalam memperoleh informasi, identitas pribadi, interkasi sosial, dan hiburan. Tipe penelitian yang digunakan ialah deskriptif dengan pendekatan kuantitatif. Dalam penelitian ini digunakan metode survei, dengan menggunakan kuesioner sebagai instrumen pengumpulan datanya. Populasi dalam penelitian iniadalah Mahasiswa/i Broadcasting 2017 Universitas Mercu Buana dengan sampel 54 responden yang diambil secara purposive sampling. Secara keseluruhan, berdasarkan perhitungan skala Likert dapat diketahui motif utama yang mendorong Mahasiswa/i Broadcasting 2017 Universitas Mercu Buana dalam bermain TikTok adalah kebutuhan hiburan yaitu sebesar 85%. Dan berdasarkan rumus mean score perolehan tertinggi dimiliki oleh dimensi hiburan yaitu sebesar 4,11. Kata Kunci : Media Sosial, Teori Uses and Gratification, Motivasi
