Abstract
Serial is one of the effective mass communication media and is able to change people's views on something. The series “Inventing Anna” is a popular Netflix series and has drawn various audience responses regarding the character of Anna who manages to deceive many people through the self-image she builds. This study aims to determine the audience's reception of the self-image of Anna character in the Netflix series "Inventing Anna". This study uses the theory of self-image forming factors by Mappiare: physical condition, name, clothing and jewelry, association and social development, and family circumstances. According to Malhi, other selfimage forming factor is knowledge, and according to Burns are ability and attitude. This research approach is qualitative with a constructivist paradigm. The research method used is reception analysis method by Stuart Hall. The data collection technique used was Focus Group Discussion with five informants consisting of company employees and business people. The results of the study show that the reception of the audience regarding Anna's self-image is diverse. In interpreting the various factors that form Anna's self-image, informants are divided into three positions, which are dominant-hegemonic, negotiations, and opposition. There are informants who accept that these factors support the self-image of Anna, there are also informants who reject it and give their own interpretation based on their views and experiences. Keywords: reception analysis, self-image, Netflix series “Inventing Anna” Serial merupakan salah satu media komunikasi massa yang efektif dan mampu mengubah pandangan masyarakat terhadap suatu hal. Serial “Inventing Anna” merupakan serial Netflix yang populer dan menuai berbagai tanggapan penonton mengenai tokoh Anna yang berhasil menipu banyak orang melalui citra diri yang ia bangun. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui resepsi khalayak terhadap citra diri tokoh Anna dalam serial Netflix “Inventing Anna”. Penelitian ini menggunakan teori faktor pembentuk citra diri oleh Mappiare: keadaan fisik, nama, pakaian dan perhiasan, pergaulan dan perkembangan sosial, dan keadaan keluarga. Faktor pembentuk citra diri lainnya menurut Malhi adalah pengetahuan, serta menurut Burns adalah kemampuan dan sikap. Pendekatan penelitian ini adalah kualitatif dengan paradigma konstruktivis. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah metode analisis resepsi Stuart Hall. Teknik pengumpulan data yang digunakan adalah Focus Group Discussion dengan lima orang informan yang terdiri dari karyawan perusahaan dan pelaku bisnis. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pemaknaan khalayak terhadap citra diri tokoh Anna berbeda-beda. Dalam memaknai berbagai faktor pembentuk citra diri tokoh Anna, informan terbagi menjadi tiga posisi yaitu hegemoni dominan, negosiasi, dan oposisi. Terdapat informan yang menerima makna bahwa faktor tersebut mendukung citra diri tokoh Anna, terdapat pula yang menolak makna dan memberi makna sendiri berdasarkan pandangan dan pengalamannya.
