Abstract
Pay it Forward is a concept of a movement that describes the benefits of continuing acts of kindness in order to get the good things continuously. If we’re looking for where this philosophy came from, the Pay it Forward campaign has become increasingly popular due to the film adaptation of the best-selling novel of the same title. The purpose of this study is to analyze the indication and meaning of the representation of the moral message of continuing the goodness contained in the “Pay it Forward” film. The theory used is Representation Theory Stuart Hall and Theory Social Construction Peter L Berger and Thomas Luckman.This study is based on the concept of kindness by Costa and McCrae, which is a grouping of the dimensions of goodness into several categories. The research method uses constructivist paradigm with a descriptive qualitative approach and Roland Barthes’ semiotic analysis, which focuses on signs through the representation of moral messages using denotative, connotative and mythical meanings. The results of this study are in the film of "Pay it Forward" scenes that represent the meaning of continuing goodness. By using the dimensions of kindness according to Costa and McCrae, there are three of the six dimensions of goodness contained in the Pay it Forward scene, namely the dimensions of trust, selflessness (Altruism), and concern for others (Tendermindedness). Keyword : Film, Representation of moral value, Pay it Forward, Semiotic, Continuing Goodness Pay it Forward merupakan sebuah konsep dari gerakan yang menggambarkan manfaat dari tindakan kebaikan yang diteruskan agar melahirkan kebaikan secara beruntun. Jika ditelusuri dari mana jejak filosofi ini berasal, kampanye Pay it Forward semakin populer berkat film yang diadaptasi dari novel best seller dengan judul yang sama. Tujuan dalam penelitian ini adalah menganalisis tanda dan makna representasi pesan moral meneruskan kebaikan yang terkandung dalam film Pay it Forward. Teori yang digunakan adalah teori Representasi Stuart Hall dan Teori Konstruksi Realitas Sosial Peter L Berger dan Thomas Luckmann. Penelitian ini berlandaskan pada konsep kebaikan Costa dan McCrae yang mengelompokan dimensi kebaikan ke dalam beberapa kategori. Penelitian ini menggunakan paradigma konstruktivis dengan pendekatan kualitatif dan Analisis Semiotika Roland Barthes. Semiotika Roland Barthes terdiri dari denotasi, konotasi, dan mitos guna menemukan makna dari tanda yang ditampilkan. Hasil dari penelitian ini yaitu pada film Pay it Forward ditemukan adegan yang merepresentasikan makna meneruskan kebaikan. Dengan menggunakan dimensi kebaikan menurut Costa dan McCrae, ada tiga dari enam dimensi kebaikan yang dominan dalam adegan Pay it Forward yaitu dimensi percaya (trust), tidak mementingkan diri sendiri (Altruism), dan kepedulian terhadap orang lain (Tender-mindedness).
