Abstract

This research is focused on interpersonal communication in married couples, especially in the period of the baby blues syndrome by using a social penetration theory approach. This research aims to illustrate the pattern of interpersonal communication formed through the process of communication and support that occurs in the husband and wife relationship in the baby blues syndrome period through the opinion of the wife. This research uses a case study method where data collection is done through interviews with informants. The informants consisted of five women who had the criteria that it was the first time they gave birth and had experienced the baby blues syndrome after their birth. The results of the study found that the interpersonal communication process in that period tended to be initiated through the wife's self-disclosure. Through the interaction of the informant with the husband. The informant then defines the form of support provided by the husband in both verbal and non-verbal forms as a reaction to the self-disclosure that has been done by the wife. The communication cycle then forms a certain communication pattern which shows that the four couples tend to have a balanced communication pattern which is characterized by the involvement of the husband, especially in providing instrumental support on matters related to child care and household activities. Meanwhile, the communication pattern in one other couple is considered unbalanced, which is marked by the lack of support from the husband, so the wife decides to seek support from her female friend who also has a similar experience of the baby blues. Keywords: Interpersonal Communication, Communication Pattern, Marriage Communication, Husband and Wife Communication, Baby Blues Syndrome Penelitian ini difokuskan tentang komunikasi interpersonal pada pasangan suami istri khususnya di periode terjadinya gangguan baby blues dengan menggunakan pendekatan teori penetrasi sosial. Penelitian bertujuan untuk mengilustrasikan pola komunikasi interpersonal yang terbentuk melalui proses komunikasi dan dukungan yang terjadi pada hubungan suami istri di periode baby blues syndrome melalui pendapat dari pihak istri. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode studi kasus yang pengumpulan datanya dilakukan melalui wawancara dengan informan. Adapun informan terdiri dari lima wanita yang memiliki kriteria yaitu baru pertama kali melahirkan dan pernah mengalami gangguan baby blues pasca kelahirannya tersebut. Hasil penelitian menemukan bahwa proses komunikasi interpersonal di periode tersebut cenderung diinisasi melalui sikap pembukaan diri oleh istri. Melalui interaksi informan dengan sang suami, informan kemudian mendefinisikan bentuk dukungan yang diberikan suami baik dalam bentuk verbal maupun non verbal sebagai reaksi atas pembukaan diri yang telah dilakukan oleh istri. Siklus komunikasi tersebut kemudian membentuk pola komunikasi tertentu yang menunjukkan bahwa dari keempat pasangan cenderung memiliki pola komunikasi seimbang yang ditandai dengan keterlibatan suami terutama dalam memberikan dukungan instrumental pada hal-hal terkait pengasuhan anak maupun aktivitas rumah tangga. Sementara pola komunikasi pada satu pasangan lainnya dinilai tidak seimbang yang ditandai dengan minimnya dukungan dari suami sehingga istri memutuskan untuk mencari dukungan dari sahabat wanitanya yang juga memiliki pengalaman baby blues serupa.
