Abstract
The aim of the research is to find out the meaning which is hidden in the symbols of religious tolerance in the film. Harmoni dalam “?” is a movie with religious theme which is applied in social life. In discussing the matter, the writer used qualitative method with semiotic analysis of Roland Barthes. The writer analyzed five scenes which described the symbols of religious tolerance. Based on the process of denotation and connotation, the myths were identified that public figure was an important person who can solve the conflict, The “halal” food, which was available in Chinese restaurant, would not be sold out, divorce and apostate were fatal error, and Moslem bore mutual respect to the other religion. The result showed those symbols was influenced by an ideology, which was pluralism. He concludes that the film maker encourages the audience that pluralism is useful to build inter religion relationship in Indonesia. Keywords: Mass Communication, Symbols, Semiotic, Tolerance, Pluralism. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui makna dibalik simbol toleransi beragama dalam film. Harmoni dalam “?” adalah film yang mengangkat tema religi dalam kehidupan sehari-hari. Dalam menelaah penelitian ini, penulis menggunakan metode kualitatif dengan analisis semiotika Roland Barthes. Penulis meneliti lima scene dalam film yang menggambarkan toleransi beragama. Berdasarkan analisis denotasi dan konotasi, penulis menemukan mitos yaitu tokoh masyarakat penting sebagai peredam konflik, makanan halal di restoran Cina tidak laku dijual, perceraian dan pindah keyakinan adalah kesalahan fatal, kebebasan seni, dan umat Islam menghargai umat lain. Hasilnya menunjukkan bahwa simbol toleransi beragama tidak lepas dari sebuah ideologi yakni pluralisme. Penulis menyimpulkan bahwa pembuat film mengajak penontonnya untuk melihat bahwa pluralisme berguna untuk membina kerukunan beragama di Indonesia. Kata Kunci: Komunikasi Massa, Simbol, Semiotika, Toleransi, Pluralisme.
