Abstract

The Da Vinci Code (DVC) is a controversial book of the century which is believed to shake the establishment of the Church and blaspheme the Christian faith by saying that Jesus was only human, not God, and that he married a woman named Mary Magdalene whose descendants are still living today in Europe. For Catholics/Christians, this book can be compared with The Satanic Verses for Muslims which is banned in Indonesia. Serambi, who was then four years old and formerly known as the publisher of Islamic books, got the copyright of DVC for publishing in Indonesia. This study focuses on why Serambi published DVC as well as why and how it could be published in Indonesia. The method used in this is case study with qualitative approach. Based on constructivism paradigm, the theory of political economy of media, which states that media institutions are part of the economic system and is closely related to the political system, is used for analysis. The result shows that the issuance of DVC departed from economic motive. Its presence was triggered by a more loosely government control after the reform; the Muslim audiences; the condition of book industry, market, and competition in Indonesia; the interests of media owner as well as values and internal condition of Serambi as a newcomer publisher. The Da Vinci Code (DVC) adalah buku kontroversial abad ini yang diyakini mengguncang kemapanan Gereja dan menghujat keimanan Kristen dengan mengatakan bahwa Yesus hanyalah manusia biasa dan bahwa ia menikahi seorang perempuan bernama Maria Magdalena yang keturunannya masih hidup hingga kini di Eropa. Bagi umat Katolik/Kristen, buku ini bisa dibandingkan dengan The Satabic Verses bagi umat Muslim yang dilarang beredar di Indonesia. Serambi, yang kala itu baru berusia empat tahun dan sebelumnya dikenal sebagai penerbit buku-buku Islam, mendapat hak penerbitannya di Indonesia. Penelitian ini difokuskan untuk menjawab mengapa Serambi menerbitkan DVC serta mengapa dan bagaimana buku ini bisa hadir di Indonesia. Penelitian berparadigma konstruktivis ini menggunakan metode studi kasus dengan pendekatan kualitatif. Untuk membedah masalah, digunakan teori ekonomi politik media yang menyatakan bahwa institusi media merupakan bagian dari sistem ekonomi yang terkait erat dengan sistem politik. Hasilnya, penerbitan DVC berangkat dari kepentingan ekonomi. Kehadirannya dipicu oleh lebih longgarnya kontrol pemerintah pasca reformasi; khalayak yang sebagian besar Muslim; kondisi industri buku, pasar, dan kompetisi di Indonesia; kepentingan pemilik serta nilai dan kondisi Serambi sebagai penerbit baru.
