Abstract

Due to many negative stigmas that still exist in social communities, especially in the city of Jakarta, the author sees the impression management of the tattoos users who under went both social and also professional roles. Not all users showing his tattoos openly in public. Most of them only show their tattoos on their tattooed community, or they only show the tattoo after office hours, while hanging out with their friends. The author uses a constructivist paradigm, with the phenomenological methodology. Subjects were professional workers who have tattoos and live in the city of Jakarta. Aspects of communication which is also the object of this study are the concept of self, role, and the impression management from professional workers who have tattoos in presenting themselves. Of the 11 informants were interviewed by the author, there are 4 motives of self-concept from tattoo users, namely : personal motives, relational motives, community motives and the motives of accidental. Through this research, the author also found two motives collision: accidental and intentional. Most informants use impression management to reduce collisions between the concepts of them selves and their roles in society. Dikarenakan masih banyaknya stigma negatif yang ada dalam sosial khususnya di kota Jakarta, maka penulis melihat adanya pengelolaan kesan dari para pengguna tato yang menjalani peran-peran sosial maupun profesional. Tidak semua pengguna tato memperlihatkan tatonya secara terang-terangan pada masyarakat umum. Kebanyakan dari mereka hanya memperlihatkan tato mereka pada komunitas tato mereka, ataupun mereka hanya memperlihatkan tato di luar jam kerja, saat berkumpul bersama teman-teman mereka. Penulis menggunakan paradigma konstruktivis, dengan metodologi fenomenologi. Subjek penelitian adalah pekerja profesional pengguna tato yang berada di kota Jakarta. Aspek komunikasi yang juga menjadi objek penelitian ini adalah konsep diri, peran, dan manajemen impresi para pekerja profesional pengguna tato dalam mempresentasikan diri mereka. Dari 11 informan yang diwawancara penulis, terdapat 4 motif konsep diri pengguna tato, yaitu motif pribadi, motif relasional, motif komunitas, dan motif aksidental. Terdapat 2 motif benturan yaitu disengaja dan tidak disengaja. Sebagian besar informan menggunakan manajemen impresi untuk mengurangi benturan antara konsep diri mereka dengan peran dalam sosial mereka.
