Abstract
Film is an audiovisual medium that conveys messages, ideas, and values through a compelling narrative. In the filmmaking process, the director plays a crucial role in translating the screenplay into visual form to ensure that the story is effectively communicated to the audience. This study aims to describe the role of the director in the production process of the short film Retak di Atas Meja and to analyze the application of screen direction and mise en scène techniques in supporting visual continuity and conveying the emotional aspects of the story. This research employed a descriptive method using a research by practice approach, in which the study was conducted through the process of creating a film. Data were collected through observations during the pre-production, production, and post-production stages, as well as documentation related to the directing process. The results indicate that the application of the screen direction technique successfully maintained the continuity of eyelines, movement directions, and character positions, making transitions between shots clearer and easier for the audience to follow. Furthermore, the implementation of mise en scène through the arrangement of setting, lighting, props, costumes, and actor blocking effectively created the desired atmosphere while strengthening the characters and the family conflict presented in the story. Although several challenges arose during the production process, including scheduling conflicts with the cast, crew delays, and communication issues during post-production, these obstacles were successfully addressed through effective coordination and teamwork. It can be concluded that the implementation of screen direction and mise en scène played a significant role in enhancing the visual quality and strengthening the delivery of the film's message. In addition, the director's role was essential in coordinating the entire production process to ensure that the artistic and narrative objectives of the short film Retak di Atas Meja were successfully achieved. Film merupakan media audio visual yang mampu menyampaikan pesan, gagasan, dan nilai-nilai kehidupan kepada penonton melalui rangkaian cerita yang dikemas secara menarik. Dalam proses pembuatannya, sutradara memiliki peran penting dalam menerjemahkan naskah ke dalam bentuk visual agar cerita dapat tersampaikan dengan baik. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menjelaskan peran sutradara dalam proses produksi film pendek Retak di Atas Meja serta menganalisis penerapan teknik screen direction dan mise en scène dalam mendukung kontinuitas visual dan penyampaian emosi cerita. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode deskriptif dengan pendekatan research by practice, yaitu penelitian yang dilakukan melalui proses penciptaan karya film. Data diperoleh melalui observasi selama proses pra-produksi, produksi, dan pasca-produksi, serta dokumentasi yang berkaitan dengan proses penyutradaraan. Hasil produksi karya menunjukkan bahwa penerapan teknik screen direction mampu menjaga kontinuitas arah pandang, arah gerak, dan posisi pemain sehingga perpindahan antarshot terlihat lebih jelas dan mudah dipahami oleh penonton. Sementara itu, penerapan mise en scène melalui pengaturan setting, pencahayaan, properti, kostum, dan blocking pemain mampu membangun suasana serta memperkuat karakter dan konflik dalam cerita. Meskipun terdapat beberapa kendala selama proses produksi, seperti penyesuaian jadwal pemain, keterlambatan kru, dan hambatan komunikasi pada tahap pasca-produksi, seluruh kendala dapat diatasi melalui koordinasi dan kerja sama tim yang baik. Berdasarkan hasil produksi karya, dapat disimpulkan bahwa penerapan teknik screen direction dan mise en scène berperan penting dalam mendukung kualitas visual serta memperkuat penyampaian pesan dalam film pendek Retak di Atas Meja. Selain itu, peran sutradara menjadi faktor utama dalam mengoordinasikan seluruh proses produksi sehingga tujuan artistik dan naratif film dapat tercapai dengan baik.
