Abstract
Cultural diversity in the workplace is one of the factors influencing the communication and adaptation processes of migrant workers. Differences in language, customs, values, and patterns of interaction among cultural groups may lead to culture shock, which affects an individual's ability to adjust to a work environment with different cultural backgrounds. This study aims to analyze intercultural communication in the adaptation process of migrant workers from Central Java at PT Bentang Inti Aksara, focusing on verbal communication, nonverbal communication, and the forms of culture shock experienced during the adaptation process. This research employed a qualitative approach using a case study method within a constructivist paradigm. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and documentation involving six informants selected using a purposive sampling technique. The data were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman data analysis technique, which consists of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that the adaptation process of migrant workers follows Lysgaard's UCurve stages, namely the honeymoon, culture shock, recovery, and adjustment phases. During the initial stage, the informants had positive expectations before migrating; however, after entering the workplace, they experienced culture shock characterized by differences in verbal and nonverbal communication styles, limited social interaction, changes in the physical environment, eating habits, and the rhythm of daily life and work. Over time, the informants gradually understood the organizational culture, established communication with their co-workers, utilized social support, and adjusted their verbal and nonverbal communication without losing their original cultural identity. The findings show that verbal and nonverbal communication play an important role in helping migrant workers understand a work environment with different cultural backgrounds and support the success of their adaptation process. This study concludes that the successful adaptation of migrant workers is influenced not only by their individual ability to adjust but also by communication processes, social support, and an understanding of the organizational culture developed within the workplace. Keywords: Intercultural Communication, Cultural Adaptation, Culture Shock, Verbal and Nonverbal Communication, Migrant Workers.
