Abstract
Gender equality representation in the media is important to study because media can influence how society understands the roles of men and women. One series that presents this issue is The Diplomat Season 1 Episode 1 through the character Kate Wyler, a woman who holds a strategic position in the field of diplomacy. This study aims to examine audience interpretations of gender equality in The Diplomat Season 1 Episode 1 using Stuart Hall’s reception analysis. This study uses a critical paradigm with a qualitative approach and Stuart Hall’s reception analysis method. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with five informants who had watched The Diplomat Season 1 Episode 1. The data were analyzed based on Stuart Hall’s three decoding positions: dominant, negotiated, and oppositional. The results show that the informants’ interpretations were divided into the three positions, with the dominant position being the most common. Informants in the dominant position accepted Kate as a competent woman who is capable of leading, making decisions, and performing her role in the public sphere. Negotiated and oppositional positions appeared in several aspects, including communication style, emotional expression, confrontational actions, and the relationship between professional and domestic roles. These differences were influenced by the informants’ educational background, occupation, personal experiences, and social environment. The discussion shows that audiences do not interpret messages about gender equality in the same way, but relate them to their own experiences and perspectives. This study suggests that series producers should continue presenting diverse representations of women without being limited by gender stereotypes. Keywords: reception analysis, Stuart Hall, gender equality, The Diplomat, audience interpretation. Kata Kunci: analisis resepsi, Stuart Hall, kesetaraan gender, The Diplomat, pemaknaan khalayak.
