Abstract

This study analyzes the representation of gender stereotypes in Lucky Kuswandi's film, A Normal Woman, released on Netflix in July 2025, using Roland Barthes' semiotic approach. This research aims to uncover how gender constructions are represented and signified through visual and narrative signs within the film. A descriptive qualitative method was employed to analyze linguistic, coded iconic, and uncoded iconic messages using dialogue, expressions, gestures, and cinematic symbols as units of analysis. The results indicate that at the denotative level, women are represented in domestic roles and subordinate positions, whereas men are constructed as authority figures. At the connotative level, power relations manifest through financial control, gender-based spatial division, and emotional demands placed on women. Furthermore, the internalization of patriarchal values occurs among women across generations, demonstrating the robust reproduction of this value system. At the mythological level, gender stereotypes appear as normalized constructions that are accepted as social truths. From a radical feminist perspective, these findings confirm that patriarchy is a deeply rooted power structure operating through cultural representations, including the media. Therefore, the depicted gender stereotypes must not only be understood but also challenged, as they function to maintain dominance and restrict female autonomy. Overall, the film illustrates the role of media as an arena that not only represents social reality but also reproduces and opens a space for criticizing dominant patriarchal constructions. From the perspective of radical feminism, the findings affirm that patriarchy is a deeply rooted system of power operating through cultural representations, including the media. Therefore, the gender stereotypes portrayed in the film should not only be understood but also critically challenged, as they function to maintain male dominance and restrict women's autonomy. Overall, the film demonstrates that the media serves not only as a site for representing social reality but also as a mechanism for reproducing, while simultaneously contesting, dominant patriarchal constructions. The findings of this study are expected to enrich the fields of semiotic and gender studies, while encouraging more critical interpretations of women's representation in popular media Keywords : Gender stereotypes, Roland Barthes semiotics, Radical Feminism, representation of women, patriarchal myth, A Normal Woman film Penelitian ini menganalisis representasi stereotip gender dalam film A Normal Woman karya Lucky Kuswandi yang dirilis di Netflix pada Juli 2025, dengan menggunakan pendekatan semiotika Roland Barthes.
