Abstract
This phenomenological research is motivated by the high level of social anxiety among early adult Gen Z who feel pressured to always stay connected and follow trends on the TikTok application, a phenomenon known as Fear of Missing Out (FOMO). Amidst the rapid flow of information, falling behind on digital trends is often perceived as a lack of social relevance in the public eye. This study aims to understand deeply how the experience of FOMO shapes the communication patterns, identities, and social relationships of its users. Utilizing the constructivism paradigm and a qualitative approach through Alfred Schutz's phenomenological method, the researcher conducted in-depth interviews with 10 informants from various backgrounds to explore the subjective meanings behind their actions.The research findings reveal that the experience of FOMO among early adult Gen Z on the TikTok application manifests as a strong urge to constantly stay connected with information flows and the latest trends to maintain social connections. This experience is triggered by the need for information, social reasons, and emotional needs, where TikTok is regarded as the primary space to gain recognition and praise from peers. Informants consciously follow TikTok's mechanisms as an effort to manage anxiety stemming from the fear of being excluded and to ensure their existence remains recognized in the digital world. Ultimately, this research concludes that FOMO has formed a new life reality for Gen Z, where their self-confidence significantly depends on their ability to keep up with the trends created by the application. Keywords: Alfred Schutz, FOMO, Gen Z, Phenomenology, Tiktok Penelitian fenomenologi ini dilatarbelakangi oleh fenomena tingginya tingkat kecemasan sosial di kalangan gen z dewasa awal yang merasa tertekan untuk selalu terhubung dan mengikuti tren di aplikasi tiktok, atau yang dikenal dengan istilah Fear of Missing Out (FOMO). Di tengah arus informasi yang cepat, ketertinggalan terhadap tren digital sering kali dianggap sebagai tanda kurangnya kelayakan sosial di mata publik. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk memahami secara mendalam bagaimana pengalaman FOMO tersebut membentuk pola komunikasi, identitas, serta relasi sosial para penggunanya. Dengan menggunakan paradigma konstruktivisme dan pendekatan kualitatif melalui metode fenomenologi Alfred Schutz, peneliti melakukan wawancara mendalam terhadap 10 informan dari berbagai latar belakang untuk menggali makna subjektif di balik tindakan mereka. Temuan penelitian mengungkapkan bahwa pengalaman FOMO pada gen z dewasa awal di aplikasi tiktok terlihat dalam bentuk dorongan kuat untuk selalu terhubung dengan arus informasi dan tren terbaru demi menjaga hubungan sosial. Pengalaman ini dipicu oleh kebutuhan akan informasi, alasan pergaulan, dan kebutuhan emosional, di mana tiktok dianggap sebagai tempat utama untuk mendapatkan pengakuan serta pujian dari teman sebaya. Para informan secara sadar mengikuti cara kerja tiktok sebagai upaya untuk mengatasi rasa cemas karena takut dikucilkan dan memastikan keberadaan mereka tetap diakui di dunia digital. Akhirnya, penelitian ini menyimpulkan bahwa FOMO telah membentuk kenyataan hidup baru bagi gen z, di mana kepercayaan diri mereka sangat bergantung pada seberapa mampu mereka mengikuti tren di aplikasi tersebut.
