Abstract
This study aims to determine the relationship between empathy for the community with an appreciation of political humor in psychology students at Mercu Buana University. Empathy for society is defined as the ability of individuals to understand and feel the emotional state of society as a party affected by public policy through cognitive and affective processes. Meanwhile, appreciation of political humor is defined as an individual's evaluative response to a humorous stimulus that contains criticism or satire related to government policy issues, which is measured through the dimensions of humor (funniness) and appropriateness (aversiveness). The sample in this study was 289 active students of Psychology Study program obtained through non-probability sampling technique with accidental sampling method. Data were collected using an online questionnaire consisting of an adaptation of the interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI) instrument to measure empathy for the community and the Humor Appreciation Scale (HAS) with a stimulus in the form of political memes. The data analysis method used is Spearman's Rho correlation test because the data is not normally distributed. The results showed that there was a significant positive relationship between empathy for the community with the dimension of funniness (r = 0.180; p = 0.001), but no significant relationship with the dimension of aversiveness (r = 0.060; p = 0.153). The conclusion of this study is that the higher the level of empathy to the community, the greater the tendency of students to appreciate political humor as something funny. The capacity for empathy serves as a means of support for students to feel connected to the message of social criticism in political jokes, so that the content of the humor can be more easily perceived. Keywords : Empathy, Political Humor, Humor Appreciation, Psychology Student Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui hubungan antara empati kepada masyarakat dengan apresiasi terhadap humor politik pada mahasiswa Psikologi Universitas Mercu Buana. Empati kepada masyarakat didefinisikan sebagai kemampuan individu untuk memahami dan merasakan keadaan emosional masyarakat sebagai pihak yang terdampak kebijakan publik melalui proses kognitif maupun afektif. Sementara itu, apresiasi humor politik didefinisikan sebagai respon evaluatif individu terhadap stimulus humor yang memuat kritik atau satire terkait isu kebijakan pemerintahan, yang diukur melalui dimensi kelucuan (funniness) dan kepantasan (aversiveness). Sampel dalam penelitian ini berjumlah 289 mahasiswa aktif program studi Psikologi yang diperoleh melalui teknik non-probability sampling dengan metode accidental sampling. Data dikumpulkan menggunakan kuesioner daring yang terdiri dari adaptasi instrumen Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI) untuk mengukur empati kepada masyarakat dan Humor Appreciation Scale (HAS) dengan stimulus berupa meme politik. Metode analisis data yang digunakan adalah uji korelasi Spearman’s Rho karena data tidak berdistribusi normal. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan terdapat hubungan positif yang signifikan antara empati kepada masyarakat dengan dimensi funniness (r = 0,180; p = 0,001), namun tidak ditemukan hubungan yang signifikan dengan dimensi aversiveness (r = 0,060; p = 0,153). Kesimpulan dari penelitian ini adalah semakin tinggi tingkat empati kepada masyarakat, maka semakin besar kecenderungan mahasiswa untuk mengapresiasi humor politik sebagai sesuatu yang lucu. Kapasitas empati berfungsi sebagai sarana pendukung bagi mahasiswa untuk merasa terhubung dengan pesan kritik sosial dalam lelucon politik, sehingga muatan humor tersebut dapat lebih mudah dirasakan.
