Abstract
This study aims to determine and explain the effect of exposure to the Korean drama When Life Gives You Tangerines on individual character development among students of the Faculty of Communication Sciences, Universitas Mercu Buana Meruya. The independent variable in this study is exposure to Korean dramas, defined as the level of intensity with which students access and watch the drama through digital platforms, including frequency, duration, and attention to the content. The dependent variable is individual character development, which encompasses the aspects of knowledge (knowing), action (acting), and habit (habit) as outcomes of the internalization of values conveyed through the media. This research employs a quantitative explanatory approach using a survey method. The research sample consists of 94 respondents selected through purposive sampling, with the criteria being students of the Faculty of Communication Sciences, Universitas Mercu Buana Meruya who have watched the Korean drama When Life Gives You Tangerines. Data were collected through questionnaire distribution and analyzed using simple linear regression analysis, correlation coefficient test (R), coefficient of determination test (R²), and t-test with the assistance of SPSS version 27. The results indicate that exposure to the Korean drama When Life Gives You Tangerines has a significant effect on students’ character development. The correlation coefficient (R) value of 0.808 indicates a very strong relationship between the two variables. Meanwhile, the coefficient of determination (R²) value of 0.653 shows that 65.3% of students’ character development is influenced by exposure to the Korean drama, while the remaining 34.7% is influenced by other factors outside this study. The interpretation of the findings reveals that the character development process among respondents is still at an early stage, namely the knowledge stage, where understanding of values and moral messages conveyed in the drama is more dominant than their application in daily behavior. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui dan menjelaskan pengaruh terpaan drama Korea “When Life Gives You Tangerines” terhadap perkembangan karakter individu yaitu mahasiswa Fakultas Ilmu Komunikasi Universitas Mercu Buana Meruya. Variabel independen dalam penelitian ini adalah terpaan drama Korea, yang didefinisikan sebagai tingkat intensitas mahasiswa dalam mengakses dan menonton drama tersebut melalui platform digital, meliputi frekuensi, durasi, dan perhatian terhadap isi tayangan. Sementara itu, variabel dependen adalah perkembangan karakter individu, yang mencakup aspek pengetahuan (knowing), pelaksanaan (acting), dan kebiasaan (habit) sebagai hasil dari proses internalisasi nilai yang diperoleh dari media. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif eksplanatif dengan metode survei. Sampel penelitian berjumlah 94 responden yang ditentukan menggunakan teknik purposive sampling, dengan kriteria mahasiswa Fakultas Ilmu Komunikasi Universitas Mercu Buana Meruya yang telah menonton drama Korea “When Life Gives You Tangerines”. Data dikumpulkan melalui penyebaran kuesioner dan dianalisis menggunakan metode regresi linier sederhana, uji koefisien korelasi (R), uji koefisien determinasi (R²), serta uji t dengan bantuan perangkat lunak SPSS versi 27. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa terpaan drama Korea When Life Gives You Tangerines berpengaruh signifikan terhadap perkembangan karakter mahasiswa. Nilai koefisien korelasi (R) sebesar 0,808 menunjukkan adanya hubungan yang sangat kuat antara kedua variabel. Nilai koefisien determinasi (R²) sebesar 0,653 mengindikasikan bahwa 65,3% perkembangan karakter mahasiswa dipengaruhi oleh terpaan drama Korea tersebut, sedangkan 34,7% sisanya dipengaruhi oleh faktor lain di luar penelitian. Interpretasi hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa proses perkembangan karakter mahasiswa masih berada pada tahap awal, yaitu tahap pengetahuan, di mana pemahaman terhadap nilai dan pesan moral dalam drama lebih dominan dibandingkan penerapan dalam perilaku sehari-hari.
