Abstract
Career choice during adolescence is a crucial decision because it affects further education and future employment. As the closest social environment, the family can shape how adolescents understand themselves and make choices, particularly through parent–child communication. This study aims to examine the extent to which parent–child communication influences adolescents’ career choice decisions in West Jakarta. This study employed a quantitative approach using a survey method. The respondents were 100 adolescents aged 15–19 years in West Jakarta, selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using a Likert-scale questionnaire that had been tested for validity and reliability. Parent–child communication was measured through openness, empathy, support, positive attitude, and equality, while career choice decision-making was measured using the fantasy, tentative, and realistic stages. The results of the simple linear regression analysis indicate that parent–child communication has a significant effect on adolescents’ career choice decisions. The coefficient of determination (R²) of 0.633 shows that 63.3% of the variance in career choice decisions is explained by parent–child communication, while the remaining 36.7% is influenced by other factors. The t-test produced a t-value of 12.999 with a significance level of 0.000 (< 0.05), indicating that Hₐ is accepted. These findings confirm that the quality of communication within the family is an important factor in helping adolescents make more mature and realistic career decisions. Therefore, parents are encouraged to develop more open, empathetic, and supportive interpersonal communication so that adolescents feel more confident in determining their career choices. Arah pilihan karier pada masa remaja merupakan keputusan penting karena berpengaruh pada pendidikan lanjutan dan pekerjaan di masa depan. Keluarga sebagai lingkungan terdekat dapat membentuk cara remaja memahami diri dan menentukan pilihan, terutama melalui komunikasi antara orang tua dan anak. Penelitian ini bertujuan mengetahui sejauh mana pengaruh komunikasi orang tua dan anak terhadap keputusan pilihan karier remaja di Jakarta Barat. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif dengan metode survei. Responden berjumlah 100 remaja berusia 15–19 tahun di Jakarta Barat yang dipilih dengan teknik purposive sampling. Data dikumpulkan melalui kuesioner skala Likert yang telah diuji validitas dan reliabilitasnya. Variabel komunikasi orang tua dan anak diukur melalui keterbukaan, empati, dukungan, sikap positif, dan kesetaraan, sedangkan keputusan pilihan karier diukur melalui tahap fantasi, tentatif, dan realistis. Hasil analisis regresi linier sederhana menunjukkan komunikasi orang tua dan anak berpengaruh signifikan terhadap keputusan pilihan karier remaja. Nilai koefisien determinasi (R²) sebesar 0,633 menunjukkan 63,3% variasi keputusan pilihan karier dijelaskan oleh komunikasi orang tua dan anak, sedangkan 36,7% dipengaruhi faktor lain. Uji t menunjukkan t hitung 12,999 dengan signifikansi 0,000 (< 0,05), sehingga Hₐ diterima. Temuan ini menegaskan bahwa kualitas komunikasi dalam keluarga merupakan faktor penting dalam membantu remaja mengambil keputusan karier yang lebih matang dan realistis. Oleh karena itu, orang tua disarankan membangun komunikasi interpersonal yang lebih terbuka, empatik, dan suportif agar remaja lebih yakin menentukan pilihan karier.
