Abstract
S45C steel is widely used in engineering components for its moderate carbon content, but its mechanical properties only reach their full potential after heat treatment. Unfortunately, the quenching media commonly used for this, water and oil, aren't particularly environmentally friendly. This study therefore explores aged coconut water mixed with Al₂O₃ powder at several concentrations (0%, 0.01%, 0.05%, 0.1%, and 0.5%) as a greener alternative cooling medium. The steel was heated to 850°C, held for 120 minutes, then quenched and tested through tensile testing, Vickers hardness testing, microstructural observation, and FTIR analysis. The results show that quenching with coconut water alone was already enough to improve tensile strength and hardness compared to untreated steel. The highest tensile strength was recorded at an Al₂O₃ concentration of 0.05%, reaching 578.88 MPa, while the highest hardness appeared instead at 0.01%, at 513.42 HV. Interestingly, adding more Al₂O₃ didn't always make things better—at 0.05%, hardness actually dropped, likely because the Al₂O₃ particles agglomerated and made the cooling process uneven. This is also consistent with the microstructural observations and FTIR spectra. Overall, these findings suggest that Al₂O₃-enriched aged coconut water has real potential as an alternative quenching medium, though getting the concentration right is key to achieving optimal results.
