Abstract
S45C steel is a medium carbon steel widely used in industrial components due to its favorable combination of strength and toughness, yet it remains susceptible to corrosion, which can reduce material quality and service life. Previous studies have shown that quenching with conventional media such as water and coconut oil actually increases the corrosion rate, while other studies examining silicon oil, cashew nut shell liquid, and crude palm oil combined with, Al2O3 nanoparticles have not yet investigated their corrosion resistance. This study aims to analyze the corrosion rate of S45C steel after quenching using silicon oil and aluminum oxide. The research was conducted using a quantitative experimental method, testing specimens quenched in silicon oil, silicon oil combined with aluminum oxide, and silicon oil combined with aluminum oxide followed by tempering, using three electrochemical testing methods: Potentiodynamic Polarization, Chronoamperometry, and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy, in RO water and seawater media. The results show that the corrosion rate consistently decreased with additional treatment, from 0.089759 to 0.013604 mmPY in RO water, and from 1.7953 to 0.12276 mmPY in seawater, accompanied by an increase in polarization resistance from 7010.097 to 11463.5 Ω in RO water. These results demonstrate that the combination of silicon oil, aluminum oxide, and tempering effectively suppresses the corrosion rate of S45C steel compared to untreated specimens and those treated with silicon oil alone. Keywords: S45C steel, quenching, silicon oil, aluminum oxide, corrosion rate Baja S45C merupakan baja karbon menengah yang banyak digunakan pada komponen industri karena memiliki kombinasi kekuatan dan ketangguhan yang baik, namun rentan terhadap korosi yang dapat menurunkan kualitas dan usia pakai material. Penelitian terdahulu menunjukkan bahwa quenching dengan media konvensional seperti air dan minyak kelapa justru dapat meningkatkan laju korosi, sementara penelitian lain yang mengkaji media silicon oil, cashew nut shell liquid, dan crude palm oil yang dikombinasikan dengan nanopartikel , Al2O3 belum meninjau aspek ketahanan korosinya. Penelitian ini bertujuan menganalisis laju korosi baja S45C hasil quenching menggunakan silicon oil dan aluminium oksida. Penelitian dilakukan secara kuantitatif eksperimental, menguji spesimen quenching silicon oil, quenching silicon oil yang ditambah aluminium oksida, serta quenching silicon oil yang ditambah aluminium oksida dan dilanjutkan tempering, menggunakan metode Potentiodynamic Polarization, Chronoamperometry, dan Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy, pada media air RO dan air laut. Hasil menunjukkan laju korosi menurun konsisten seiring bertambahnya perlakuan, dari 0,089759 menjadi 0,013604 mmPY di air RO, dan dari 1,7953 menjadi 0,12276 mmPY di air laut, disertai peningkatan resistansi polarisasi dari 7010,097 menjadi 11463,5 Ω di air RO. Hasil ini membuktikan kombinasi silicon oil, aluminium oksida, dan tempering efektif menekan laju korosi baja S45C dibandingkan tanpa perlakuan maupun dengan silicon oil saja.
