Abstract
Waste management has become an increasingly urgent environmental issue that requires educational efforts from an early age. Low public awareness of waste sorting and recycling highlights the need for learning media that can convey waste management concepts in an accessible, engaging, and contextual manner. Children aged 9–12 are in the concrete operational stage of cognitive development, which means they require visual, interactive, and experience-based learning media. Therefore, an educational board game is proposed as an alternative learning medium to introduce waste sorting and recycling concepts to elementary school children. This design project aims to create an educational board game that presents knowledge about waste types, sorting processes, and waste management flows along with their environmental impacts through simple, enjoyable game mechanics appropriate to the cognitive abilities of children aged 9–12. The design method combines a user-centered design approach, gamebased learning, and practice-based research. The design stages include literature studies, analysis of similar products, concept development, visual and game mechanism design, prototyping, and limited playtesting. The board game employs a turn-based system, mission and action cards, and a point-based reward system that encourages children to make decisions related to waste management. The visual design features playful illustrations, bright colors, and clear icons to support quick and intuitive understanding. The materials and component sizes are designed according to ergonomic and safety principles suitable for children. The results indicate that this educational board game has strong potential as an alternative learning medium to enhance children’s understanding of waste sorting and recycling concepts. Through gameplay, children not only gain knowledge but also develop cause-and-effect thinking, sportsmanship, and environmental awareness. This board game is expected to be applicable as an environmental education medium in both school and home settings. Keywords: Educational board game; waste sorting; recycling; environmental education; children aged 9–12 Permasalahan sampah merupakan isu lingkungan yang semakin mendesak dan memerlukan upaya edukasi sejak usia dini. Rendahnya kesadaran masyarakat terhadap pemilahan dan daur ulang sampah menunjukkan pentingnya media pembelajaran yang mampu menyampaikan konsep pengelolaan sampah secara mudah, menarik, dan kontekstual. Anak usia 9–12 tahun berada pada tahap perkembangan kognitif operasional konkret, sehingga membutuhkan media pembelajaran yang bersifat visual, interaktif, dan berbasis pengalaman. Oleh karena itu, perancangan board game edukatif dipilih sebagai alternatif media pembelajaran untuk mengenalkan konsep pemilahan dan daur ulang sampah kepada anak usia sekolah dasar. Perancangan ini bertujuan untuk menciptakan board game edukatif yang mampu mengemas materi jenis sampah, proses pemilahan, serta alur pengelolaan dan dampak lingkungan ke dalam mekanisme permainan yang sederhana, menyenangkan, dan sesuai dengan kemampuan kognitif anak usia 9–12 tahun. Metode perancangan yang digunakan menggabungkan pendekatan user-centered design, game-based learning, dan practice-based research. Tahapan perancangan meliputi studi literatur, analisis produk sejenis, perumusan konsep, pengembangan visual dan mekanisme permainan, pembuatan prototipe, serta uji coba terbatas. Board game dirancang menggunakan sistem giliran, kartu misi dan kartu aksi, serta sistem poin yang mendorong anak untuk mengambil keputusan terkait pengelolaan sampah. Visual permainan menggunakan ilustrasi bergaya playful, warna cerah, dan ikon yang komunikatif untuk membantu anak memahami informasi secara cepat dan intuitif. Material dan ukuran komponen disesuaikan dengan prinsip ergonomi dan keamanan bagi anak. Hasil perancangan menunjukkan bahwa board game ini berpotensi menjadi media pembelajaran alternatif yang efektif dalam meningkatkan pemahaman anak terhadap konsep pemilahan dan daur ulang sampah. Melalui pengalaman bermain, anak tidak hanya memperoleh pengetahuan, tetapi juga dilatih untuk berpikir sebab–akibat, bersikap sportif, dan menumbuhkan kepedulian terhadap lingkungan. Board game ini diharapkan dapat dimanfaatkan sebagai media edukasi lingkungan di sekolah maupun di rumah. Kata Kunci : pemilahan sampah; daur ulang; pendidikan lingkungan; anak usia 9–12 tahun
