Abstract
The learning environment at Special Schools not only functions as a place for the educational process to take place, but also as a place that shapes the spatial experiences and behavior of students with visual impairments. Visual limitations cause students to be highly dependent on multisensory spatial information in developing orientation, mobility, and a sense of security when carrying out activities. However, studies on the reciprocal relationship between spatial comfort and the behavior of visually impaired students in the context of school space experiences are still limited, especially those that examine the interaction between people, place, and activity. This study aims to analyze the relationship between spatial comfort and the behavior of visually impaired students at SLB-A Pembina Tingkat Nasional Jakarta, as well as to identify spatial and personal factors that influence each other in shaping space experiences. The study used a qualitative approach with a phenomenological method to explore students' spatial experiences in depth. Data were collected through in-depth interviews using the laddering interview technique, as well as through field observations and documentation. The analysis was conducted through the stages of open coding, axial coding, and selective coding, reinforced by statistical analysis using JMP software to test the significance of the relationship between the categories of findings. The results showed that spatial comfort was greatly influenced by the multisensory legibility of the space, the consistency of the layout, and the circulation structure that supported the formation of mental maps and orientation stability. Places that are difficult to access and confusing correlate with an increased frequency of incidents, while places that have clear and repetitive structures tend to be more preferred and support more stable out-of-class activities. Factors such as visual impairment, blindness category, and length of schooling were found to influence the ability to recognize the environment, the process of spatial adaptation, and spatial preferences. These findings confirm that spatial comfort and the behavior of visually impaired students have a dynamic reciprocal relationship in a school behavior setting. Therefore, the design of special needs classrooms needs to be responsive to non-visual experiences and spatial adaptation processes in order to support student independence and sense of security. Keywords: Spatial comfort, visually impaired student behavior, behavioral architecture, multisensory Lingkungan belajar pada Sekolah Luar Biasa (SLB) tidak hanya berfungsi sebagai tempat berlangsungnya proses pendidikan, tetapi juga sebagai tempat yang membentuk pengalaman spasial dan perilaku siswa penyandang disabilitas tunanetra. Keterbatasan penglihatan menyebabkan siswa sangat bergantung pada informasi multisensorial ruang dalam membangun orientasi, mobilitas, serta rasa aman saat beraktivitas. Namun, kajian mengenai hubungan timbal balik antara kenyamanan spasial dan perilaku siswa tunanetra dalam konteks pengalaman ruang sekolah masih terbatas, khususnya yang meninjau interaksi aspek people, place, dan activity. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis hubungan antara kenyamanan spasial dan perilaku siswa tunanetra di SLB-A Pembina Tingkat Nasional Jakarta, serta mengidentifikasi faktor-faktor spasial dan personal yang saling memengaruhi dalam membentuk pengalaman ruang. Penelitian menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan metode fenomenologi untuk menggali pengalaman spasial siswa secara mendalam. Data dikumpulkan melalui wawancara mendalam (deep interview) dengan teknik wawancara berjenjang (laddering interview), serta juga melalui observasi lapangan, dan dokumentasi. Analisis dilakukan melalui tahapan open coding, axial coding, dan selective coding, yang diperkuat dengan analisis statistik menggunakan perangkat lunak JMP untuk menguji signifikansi hubungan antar kategori temuan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kenyamanan spasial sangat dipengaruhi oleh legibilitas multisensorial ruang, konsistensi tata letak, serta struktur sirkulasi yang mendukung pembentukan peta mental dan stabilitas orientasi. Tempat yang sulit diakses dan membingungkan berkorelasi dengan meningkatnya frekuensi insiden, sedangkan tempat yang memiliki struktur jelas dan berulang cenderung lebih disukai serta mendukung aktivitas luar kelas yang lebih stabil. Faktor gangguan penglihatan, kategori tunanetra, dan lama bersekolah terbukti memengaruhi kemampuan mengenali lingkungan, proses adaptasi spasial, serta preferensi ruang. Temuan ini menegaskan bahwa kenyamanan spasial dan perilaku siswa tunanetra memiliki hubungan timbal balik yang dinamis dalam suatu behavior setting sekolah. Oleh karena itu, perancangan ruang SLB perlu responsif terhadap pengalaman non visual dan proses adaptasi spasial guna mendukung kemandirian dan rasa aman siswa.
