Abstract
This study examines the influence of adolescents’perceived right to freedom of speech on their participation in political discussions on the social media platform X regarding the issue of the Draft TNI Bill (RUU TNI). Freedom of speech is a fundamental human right in a democratic society; however, many adolescents still express concerns about voicing political opinions, especially on sensitive issues. This research employs a quantitative approach using a survey method involving 204 adolescents aged 20–24 in West Jakarta who actively use X and follow discussions related to the RUU TNI. Data were collected through an online questionnaire and analyzed using simple linear regression. The theoretical framework draws on John Stuart Mill’s theory of freedom of speech, Jerome Bruner’s constructivist perception theory, Huntington and Nelson’s political participation theory, and the Uses and Gratifications theory. The findings show that adolescents’ perception of their right to freedom of speech has a positive and significant effect on their political discussion participation, with a correlation value of 0.706 (strong category) and a coefficient of determination of 49.9%. This indicates that the higher the adolescents’ perception of freedom of speech, the higher their level of participation in political discussions on X. These results confirm that perceptions of freedom of speech play a crucial role in encouraging adolescents to engage in discussions about sensitive political issues in digital spaces. Key Word: freedom of speech perception, political participation, adolescents, social media X, Draft TNI Bill Penelitian ini mengkaji pengaruh persepsi hak kebebasan berbicara remaja terhadap partisipasi diskusi politik di media sosial X terkait isu RUU TNI.
