Abstract
The sudden death of a husband causes deep grief for the wife left behind. This study aims to describe the experience of grief in wives who have experienced the sudden death of their husbands. The method used is qualitative phenomenology. The research subjects consisted of four wives selected based on specific criteria. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and direct field observation, with source, method, and time triangulation used to test data validity. The analysis was conducted thematically through intra-case and cross-case analysis. The findings show that grief in all four subjects was primarily triggered by the sudden death, intensified by the closeness of the relationship and the unique personality of the spouse. Subject S reached acceptance more quickly due to age and a sense of acceptance, while Subject E experienced a longer grieving period due to a very close emotional bond. Subjects N and R, who are younger, managed their grieving process by using work as a diversion. The subjects experienced denial, anger, and bargaining, while deep sadness was present in almost all of them. This study confirms that grief in wives due to the sudden death of a husband is complex, with a unique pattern of experience for each individual. Keywords: Grief, Sudden death, Spousal loss Kematian suami secara mendadak menimbulkan duka mendalam bagi istri yang ditinggalkan. Penelitian ini bertujuan mendeskripsikan gambaran grief (duka) pada istri yang mengalami kematian suami secara mendadak. Metode yang digunakan adalah kualitatif fenomenologi. Subjek penelitian terdiri dari empat orang istri yang dipilih berdasarkan kriteria tertentu. Data dikumpulkan melalui wawancara semi-terstruktur dan observasi secara langsung di lapangan dengan triangulasi sumber, metode, dan waktu untuk menguji keabsahan data. Analisis dilakukan secara tematis melalui analisis intrakasus dan antarkasus. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa grief pada keempat subjek terutama dipicu oleh kematian mendadak, diperkuat oleh kedekatan hubungan dan kepribadian unik pasangan. Subjek S mencapai penerimaan lebih cepat karena faktor usia dan penerimaan, sementara Subjek E mengalami duka yang lebih panjang akibat kedekatan emosional yang sangat erat. Subjek N dan R, yang berusia lebih muda, mengelola proses duka mereka dengan menjadikan pekerjaan sebagai pengalihan. Tahapan grief yang dialami subjek yaitu penyangkalan, kemarahan dan penawaran, sementara kesedihan mendalam muncul hampir pada semua subjek. Penelitian ini menegaskan bahwa grief pada istri akibat kematian mendadak suami bersifat kompleks, dengan pola pengalaman yang unik pada setiap individu Kata Kunci: Grief (Duka), Kematian Mendadak, Kematian Pasangan
