Abstract

The phenomenon of Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) has increasingly emerged among young Generation Z workers in Jabodetabek, who live within the constant flow of digital information and limitless social connectivity. Excessive use of social media often generates anxiety about being left behind in social interactions, trends, or opportunities, which may lead to psychological strain and decreased work productivity. This study aims to examine the effect of self-control on FoMO, considering that self-control plays a crucial role in regulating impulses, delaying short-term gratification, and maintaining balance between digital life and real-life responsibilities. The research employed a quantitative approach with a correlational design. A total of 135 young Generation Z workers in Jabodetabek were selected through accidental sampling. The instruments used were the Brief Self-Control Scale (BSCS) to measure self-control and the FoMO scale developed by Przybylski et al. (2013) to assess FoMO levels. Data were analyzed using Spearman’s correlation test, which revealed a significant negative relationship (ρ = −0.431; p < 0.001), indicating that the higher an individual’s self-control, the lower their tendency to experience FoMO. The majority of respondents fell within the moderate category for both variables, suggesting that although they possess a fair degree of self-regulation, they remain vulnerable to digital distractions and continuous notifications. These findings highlight the protective role of self-control in reducing FoMO, helping young workers to sustain focus, productivity, and mental well-being in modern work settings. Thus, the study contributes theoretically by reinforcing the link between self-control and FoMO, and practically by encouraging workers and organizations to foster healthier digital awareness. Keywords: self-control, Fear of Missing Out, Generation Z, young workers, social Fenomena Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) semakin meningkat di kalangan pekerja muda Generasi Z di Jabodetabek yang hidup di tengah derasnya arus digital dan keterhubungan sosial tanpa batas.
