Abstract

This study aims to analyze the meaning of comedy in the horror film Agak Laen (2024) using Charles Sanders Peirce’s semiotic approach. The presence of this horror-comedy film is interesting to examine because it successfully combines two contrasting genres, horror and humor, thus creating a unique viewing experience for the audience. The focus of this research is to reveal how comedic signs are constructed in the film and how these structures of meaning function in conveying implicit social, cultural, and critical messages. The research method applied is qualitative with Charles Sanders Peirce’s semiotic analysis, which emphasizes three main elements: representamen, object, and interpretant. The research data were obtained through film text observation and documentation, then analyzed to identify visual, verbal, and symbolic signs that construct comedic meaning in the film. The results indicate that comedy in Agak Laen serves not only as entertainment but also as a medium for delivering social criticism and cultural reflection. Humor in the film is constructed through various signs such as visual expressions, dialogues, and absurd situations that contain implicit symbols and meanings. Audiences can interpret the comedy as a form of resistance against fear, a way to ease tension, as well as a medium for conveying criticism toward certain social conditions. By employing Peirce’s semiotic approach, this study emphasizes that humor can be understood as a cultural sign reflecting the social realities of Indonesian society. This research is expected to contribute to the development of film semiotics studies, particularly in uncovering the role of comedy as a medium of communication that is both critical and reflective. Keywords: Film, Horror Comedy, Somewhat Laen, Peirce's Semiotics Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis makna komedi dalam film horor Agak Laen (2024) dengan menggunakan pendekatan semiotika Charles Sanders Peirce. Kehadiran film horor-komedi ini menarik dikaji karena mampu memadukan dua genre yang kontras, yaitu horor dan humor, sehingga menghasilkan pengalaman menonton yang unik bagi penonton. Fokus penelitian ini adalah untuk mengungkap bagaimana tanda-tanda komedi dibangun dalam film dan bagaimana struktur makna tersebut berfungsi dalam menyampaikan pesan sosial, budaya, maupun kritik yang tersirat. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah kualitatif dengan analisis semiotika Charles Sanders Peirce, yang memfokuskan kajian pada tiga elemen utama yaitu representamen, objek, dan interpretant. Data penelitian diperoleh melalui observasi teks film dan dokumentasi, kemudian dianalisis untuk menemukan tanda-tanda visual, verbal, maupun simbolik yang membentuk makna komedi dalam film. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa komedi dalam film Agak Laen tidak hanya berperan sebagai hiburan, tetapi juga sebagai sarana penyampaian kritik sosial dan refleksi budaya masyarakat. Humor dalam film ini dikonstruksi melalui berbagai tanda seperti ekspresi visual, dialog, serta situasi absurd yang mengandung simbol dan makna tersirat. Penonton dapat menafsirkan komedi dalam film sebagai bentuk perlawanan terhadap ketakutan, cara untuk meredakan ketegangan, sekaligus medium penyampaian kritik terhadap kondisi sosial tertentu. Dengan menggunakan pendekatan semiotika Peirce, penelitian ini menegaskan bahwa humor dapat dipahami sebagai tanda budaya yang mencerminkan realitas sosial masyarakat Indonesia. Penelitian ini diharapkan dapat memberikan kontribusi dalam pengembangan kajian semiotika film, khususnya dalam mengungkap peran komedi sebagai medium komunikasi yang kritis dan reflektif.
