Abstract
This study examines the acceptance process of mothers of children with intellectual disabilities. In some cases, it was found that mothers with children with special needs can experience feelings of rejection of their children, especially if they lack support from their husbands or their surrounding environment. The purpose of this study was to describe and understand the dynamics of the acceptance process of mothers of children with intellectual disabilities from lower-middle economic backgrounds. This study used a descriptive qualitative approach with phenomenological methods to explore the mothers' subjective experiences in depth. Four biological mothers of children with intellectual disabilities in Tangerang served as the study subjects, selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and observations, then analyzed comprehensively. Data validity was ensured through triangulation of sources and techniques. The results showed that the mothers' acceptance process followed the stages of denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance, although with variations between subjects. Some mothers tended to move directly to the bargaining and acceptance phases after rejection, while others progressed through all stages. Factors such as economic conditions, social support, and level of religiosity significantly influenced this acceptance dynamic. Despite facing various difficulties, the mothers demonstrated resilience, patience, and deep compassion, often relying on spiritual beliefs for strength. This study emphasizes the central role of mothers as caregivers and the importance of comprehensive support for families with children with intellectual disabilities. Keywords: Intellectual Disability, Acceptance, Mother Penelitian ini mengkaji proses penerimaan pada ibu yang memiliki anak dengan disabilitas intelektual yang dimana dalam beberapa kasus, ditemukan bahwa ibu yang memiliki anak dengan kebutuhan khusus dapat mengalami rasa penolakan terhadap anaknya, terutama jika mereka tidak memiliki dukungan dari suami atau lingkungan sekitar. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mendeskripsikan dan memahami dinamika proses penerimaan seorang ibu yang memiliki anak dengan disabilitas intelektua dengan kondisi ekonomi menengah kebawah. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif deskriptif dengan metode fenomenologi untuk menggali pengalaman subjektif ibu secara mendalam. Empat ibu kandung dengan anak disabilitas intelektual di Tangerang menjadi subjek penelitian, dipilih melalui teknik purposive sampling. Data dikumpulkan melalui wawancara mendalam dan observasi, kemudian dianalisis secara komprehensif. Keabsahan data dipastikan melalui triangulasi sumber dan teknik. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa proses penerimaan ibu mengikuti tahapan penolakan, kemarahan, tawar-menawar, depresi, dan penerimaan, meskipun dengan variasi antar subjek. Beberapa ibu cenderung langsung beralih ke fase tawar-menawar dan penerimaan setelah penolakan, sementara yang lain melewati semua tahapan. Faktor-faktor seperti kondisi ekonomi, dukungan sosial, dan tingkat religiusitas sangat memengaruhi dinamika penerimaan ini. Meskipun menghadapi berbagai kesulitan, para ibu menunjukkan ketangguhan, kesabaran, dan kasih sayang yang mendalam, seringkali mengandalkan keyakinan spiritual sebagai sumber kekuatan. Penelitian ini menegaskan peran sentral ibu sebagai pengasuh dan pentingnya dukungan komprehensif bagi keluarga dengan anak disabilitas intelektual.
