Abstract

The aviation industry and its supporting sectors, including MRO (Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul), have begun to recover post-pandemic. As the largest MRO in Indonesia, GMF AeroAsia holds significant potential during this momentum. However, internal surveys and annual reports have revealed a decline in employee engagement. This condition indicates the need to evaluate internal communication, which, according to Iyer & Israel (2012), is key to building employee engagement. This study aims to describe internal communication within the Narrow Body Cabin Maintenance Unit at Hangar 4 of GMF AeroAsia in its role of enhancing employee engagement. The research adopts the theoretical framework of Internal Communication on Employee Engagement by Davardoost & Javadi (2019), which comprises five main dimensions: communication frequency, communication mode, communication direction, communication quality, and communication content. This framework is further supported by Schaufeli’s (2002) theory of Employee Engagement, which consists of three dimensions: vigor, dedication, and absorption. The study employs a post-positivist paradigm using a qualitative-descriptive approach, conducted through in-depth interviews with the Head of the Cabin Maintenance Unit at Hangar 4 as the key informanttt, as well as other supporting employees within the unit. The research also includes document and archive analysis of publicly available company records. The results show that internal communication within the Cabin Maintenance Unit at Hangar 4, GMF AeroAsia, aligns with the principles of effective internal communication and employee engagement as outlined by Davardoost and Schaufeli. However, improvements are needed in the areas of communication quality and communication direction due to differing perceptions of information frequently experienced by employees. GMF AeroAsia sebagai MRO terbesar di Indonesia memiliki peluang besar dalam momentum ini, namun, ditemukannya fenomena penurunan employee engagement berdasarkan survei internal dan laporan tahunan. Kondisi ini menunjukkan perlunya evaluasi komunikasi internal, yang menurut Iyer & Israel (2012) merupakan kunci dalam membangun employee engagement. Penelitian ini bertujuan mendeskripsikan komunikasi internal pada unit Narrow Body Cabin Maintenance Hangar 4 GMF AeroAsia dalam meningkatkan employee engagement. Penelitian ini menggunakan kerangka teori Internal Communication terhadap Employee Engagement dari Davardoost & Javadi 2019 yang memiliki lima dimensi utama, yaitu: Frekuensi komunikasi, Mode komunikasi, Arah komunikasi, Kualitas komunikasi, dan Konten komunikasi. Kemudian, kerangka teori tersebut juga didukung dengan teori Employee Engagement menurut Schaufeli 2002 yang memiliki 3 dimensi utama: Vigor, Dedication, dan Absorption. Penelitian ini menggunakan paradigma post-positivisme, dengan pendekatan kualitatif dan metode kualitatif-deskriptif, melalui wawancara mendalam dengan Kepala Bidang Unit Cabin Maintenance Hanggar 4 sebagai informant kunci dan karyawan lain di unit tersebut sebagai informant pendukung, serta analisis dokumen dan arsip perusahaan yang terpublikasi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan komunikasi internal di Unit Cabin Maintenance Hangar 4 PT GMF AeroAsia telah sesuai dengan konsep komunikasi internal dan employee engagement yang baik menurut Davardoost & Schaufeli. Namun, perlu adanya peningkatan pada aspek kualitas komunikasi dan arah komunikasi dikarenakan perbedaan persepsi terhadap informasi yang kerap dialami oleh karyawan unit.
