Abstract
The occurrence of love bombing has risen among Generation Z, especially in informal partnerships lacking official designation, which are common in urban locales like Jakarta and Bogor. Love bombing is a type of interpersonal communication marked by excessive and strong expressions of attention, admiration, or affection over a brief duration, sometimes with an ulterior motive of emotional manipulation. This study seeks to identify the types of love bombing messages and examine the communication patterns established in non-status relationships among Generation Z. The study used a qualitative descriptive methodology with a purposive sample technique, engaging 15–20 Generation Z participants from Jakarta and Bogor who have encountered love bombing. Data were gathered via comprehensive interviews and observations, then evaluated thematically in relation to interpersonal communication theory, self-disclosure, and the impact of social media. The results demonstrate that love bombing manifests in both verbal and nonverbal communication, exhibiting significant intensity during the initial phases of the relationship, hence influencing the recipient's trust and emotional equilibrium. The established communication patterns are often unequal, resulting in one partner gaining greater emotional dominance. The study finds that love bombing profoundly affects the quality of interpersonal communication, underscoring the necessity for Generation Z to cultivate awareness and proficient communication skills.
