Abstract
The issue of naturalizing foreign football players to strengthen the Indonesian National Team (Timnas) has become a hot topic among the public, especially in recent years when PSSI actively recruited players of Indonesian descent or foreign players willing to be naturalized to defend the Red and White.This phenomenon has elicited a range of responses from the public, from full support for the improvement of the national team's quality to criticism regarding ethics, nationalism, and the authenticity of national identity.This research seeks to explore how audience reception, particularly among students, is formed and developed regarding the issue of naturalizing national team players, as well as how value preferences, social backgrounds, and media experiences shape theirinterpretation of this phenomenon This research uses a qualitative approach with the reception analysis method based on Stuart Hall's encoding/decoding theory.Hall posited that the meaning of a media text is not fixed or singular, but rather interpreted in diverse ways by the audience based on their decoding positions: hegemonic-dominant, negotiated, or oppositional.In this context, the media text that is the focus of attention is the coverage from the online media outlet Kompas.com, which intensively reports on the process, dynamics, and controversies of naturalizing football players, as well as how these news articles are consumed, interpreted, and understood by the student audience as one of the active and critical segments of the public in media consumption. The research resultsshow thatstudents'reception of the naturalization issue is very diverse and not uniform.Most informants occupy a negotiating position, accepting naturalization as a short-term strategy to improve the national team's performance, but still criticizing the national football management for being inconsistent in developing local players. Keywords: Audience Reception, Naturalization, National Team Isu naturalisasi pemain sepakbola asing untuk memperkuat Tim Nasional (Timnas) Indonesia telah menjadi perbincangan hangat di kalangan masyarakat, khususnya sejak beberapa tahun terakhir ketika PSSI secara aktif merekrut pemain keturunan atau pemain asing yang bersedia dinaturalisasi untuk membela Merah Putih. Fenomena ini memunculkan beragam tanggapan dari khalayak, mulai dari dukungan penuh atas peningkatan kualitastim nasional hingga kritik terhadap etika, nasionalisme, dan keaslian identitas kebangsaan. Penelitian ini berusaha menggali bagaimana resepsi khalayak, khususnya di kalangan mahasiswa, terbentuk dan berkembang terhadap isu naturalisasi pemain timnas, serta bagaimana preferensi nilai, latar belakang sosial, dan pengalaman media membentuk cara mereka memaknai fenomena tersebut. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan metode analisis resepsi (reception analysis) yang berpijak pada teori Stuart Hall tentang encoding/decoding. Hall mengemukakan bahwa makna suatu teks media tidak bersifat tetap atau tunggal, melainkan diinterpretasikan secara beragam oleh audiens berdasarkan posisi decoding mereka: hegemonikdominan, negosiasi, atau oposisi. Dalam konteks ini, teks media yang menjadi objek perhatian adalah pemberitaan dari media daring Kompas.com yang secara intensif memberitakan proses, dinamika, dan kontroversi naturalisasi pemain sepakbola, serta bagaimana berita-berita tersebut dikonsumsi, ditafsirkan, dan dimaknai oleh khalayak mahasiswa sebagai salah satu segmen publik yang aktif dan kritis dalam konsumsi media. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa resepsi mahasiswa terhadap isu naturalisasi sangat beragam dan tidak seragam. Sebagian besar informan menempati posisi negosiasi, yaitu menerima naturalisasi sebagai strategi jangka pendek untuk meningkatkan performa timnas, namun tetap mengajukan kritik terhadap manajemen sepakbola nasional yang dianggap tidak konsisten dalam pembinaan pemain lokal.
