Abstract
This study aims to examine the extent to which dark humor with a disability-related theme influences participants' perceptions of funniness. The research employed an experimental method with a quantitative approach and a between subject experimental design, in which participants were divided into two groups: an experimental group that received disability themed humor and a control group that received non disability themed humor. A total of 60 participants were involved, with 30 individuals in each group. Measurements were conducted using the Humor Appreciation Scale (HAS), which assesses two dimensions, funniness and aversiveness, and the Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI), which was used to control for participants’ empathy levels as a control variable. The analysis revealed that non disability humor was perceived as funnier, while disability themed humor was more likely to be seen as socially inappropriate. Additionally, no significant difference in empathy levels was found between the two groups, suggesting that humor perception was more influenced by the content of the joke rather than personal traits. These findings support the Benign Violation Theory (BVT), which posits that humor arises when a norm violation is perceived as nonthreatening or socially acceptable. Therefore, humor involving disability themes should be delivered more sensitively to avoid coming across as offensive or reinforcing stigma toward people with disabilities. Keywords: Dark Humor, Disability, Funniness, Benign Violation Theory, Empathy Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui seberapa besar pengaruh dark humor bertema disabilitas terhadap persepsi kelucuan partisipan.
