Abstract
Goethe-Institut Jakarta as the center of German culture in Indonesia has a strategic role in providing educational space and cultural interaction for the community. In supporting its function, an interior design approach is needed that is not only modern and efficient, but also relevant to the local cultural context. This study adopts the principle of "form follows function" from the Bauhaus movement, which emphasizes that each design element must have a clear function and be free from unnecessary ornaments. This approach is applied through the use of simple geometric shapes, industrial materials such as steel, glass, concrete, and a neutral color palette with primary color accents. In addition, this study also integrates local cultural elements of Bandung—as a city with a wealth of art and design—through the use of natural materials, batik motifs, and inspiration from traditional Sundanese architecture, in order to create a contextual spatial identity. The method used is qualitative with a case study approach through direct observation, interviews, and documentation of existing spaces. The results of this study are expected to be able to provide recommendations for the interior design of GoetheInstitut Jakarta that is not only modern and functional, but also strengthens the cultural connection between Germany and Indonesia through a context-sensitive design approach. Goethe-Institut sebagai pusat kebudayaan Jerman di Indonesia memiliki peran strategis dalam menyediakan ruang edukatif dan interaksi budaya bagi masyarakat. Dalam mendukung fungsinya, diperlukan pendekatan desain interior yang tidak hanya modern dan efisien, tetapi juga relevan secara konteks budaya lokal. Penelitian ini mengadopsi prinsip form follows function dari gerakan Bauhaus, yang menekankan bahwa setiap elemen desain harus memiliki fungsi yang jelas dan terbebas dari ornamen yang tidak perlu. Pendekatan ini diterapkan melalui penggunaan bentuk geometris sederhana, material industri seperti baja, kaca, beton, serta palet warna netral dengan aksen warna primer. Selain itu, penelitian ini juga mengintegrasikan elemen budaya lokal Jawa Barat sebagai daerah dengan kekayaan seni dan desain melalui penggunaan material alami, motif batik, serta inspirasi dari arsitektur tradisional Sunda, guna menciptakan identitas ruang yang kontekstual. Metode yang digunakan adalah kualitatif dengan pendekatan studi kasus melalui observasi langsung, wawancara, dan dokumentasi ruang eksisting. Hasil penelitian ini diharapkan mampu memberikan rekomendasi desain interior Goethe-Institut Jakarta yang tidak hanya modern dan fungsional, namun juga memperkuat keterhubungan budaya antara Jerman dan Indonesia melalui pendekatan desain yang peka konteks.
