Abstract

This research discusses interpersonal communication between parents and children in an effort to introduce sex education during adolescence. The background of this study is that many parents in Indonesia still consider sex education a taboo topic, even though early understanding is crucial to prevent risky sexual behavior, harassment, and unwanted pregnancies. The purpose of this study is to describe the communication patterns built by parents when delivering sex education to children aged 7–14 years, as well as how children respond to that communication process. This study uses a qualitative approach with a case study method. Data was collected through in-depth interviews with five parent-child pairs in the Tangerang and South Tangerang areas. The results show that interpersonal communication conducted by parents varies in openness, depending on the parents' understanding and readiness as well as the age and character of the child. Some parents still feel awkward or hesitant, while others have started using educational media such as storytelling, casual discussions, and early habit formation to introduce concepts of the body and self-care. In conclusion, good interpersonal communication between parents and children plays a significant role in shaping a healthy understanding of sexuality. Active and empathetic parental involvement is the key for children to feel comfortable and open when receiving or asking questions related to physical and emotional changes during adolescence. Keyword : Interpersonal Communication, Parents, Children, Sex Education, Adolescents Penelitian ini membahas tentang komunikasi interpersonal antara orang tua dan anak dalam upaya memperkenalkan pendidikan seksual di usia remaja. Latar belakang dari penelitian ini adalah masih banyaknya orang tua di Indonesia yang menganggap pendidikan seksual sebagai hal yang tabu, padahal pemahaman sejak dini sangat penting untuk mencegah risiko perilaku seksual menyimpang, pelecehan, maupun kehamilan di luar nikah. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menggambarkan pola komunikasi yang dibangun orang tua ketika menyampaikan edukasi seksual kepada anak usia 7–14 tahun, serta bagaimana respon anak terhadap proses komunikasi tersebut. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan metode studi kasus. Menggunakan teori komunikasi interpersonal DeVito (2011). Data dikumpulkan melalui wawancara mendalam kepada lima pasangan orang tua dan anak di wilayah Tangerang dan Tangerang Selatan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa komunikasi interpersonal yang dilakukan oleh orang tua berjalan dengan tingkat keterbukaan yang bervariasi, tergantung pada pemahaman dan kesiapan orang tua serta usia dan karakter anak. Beberapa orang tua masih merasa canggung atau ragu, sementara yang lain mulai menggunakan media edukatif seperti cerita, diskusi santai, hingga pembiasaan sejak kecil untuk memperkenalkan konsep tubuh dan perawatan diri. Kesimpulannya, komunikasi interpersonal yang baik antara orang tua dan anak sangat berperan dalam membentuk pemahaman yang sehat mengenai seksualitas. Peran aktif dan empatik orang tua menjadi kunci agar anak merasa nyaman dan terbuka dalam menerima serta bertanya seputar hal-hal yang berkaitan dengan perubahan fisik dan emosional mereka di masa remaja.
