Abstract
The vehicle cooling system (HVAC) plays a crucial role in maintaining cabin temperature and engine performance. One of its main components is the tube, which must be leak-free to ensure optimal system efficiency. The problem addressed in this study is the limitation of the water bubble leak test method, which relies on visual inspection and is prone to human error. This research aims to redesign the leak test machine using a more efficient and systematic approach. The methodology includes direct observation at PT XXX’s production line, analysis of the existing machine design, and redesign using the VDI 2221 method, covering task clarification, functional structure, and modular structuring. The redesigned system was then evaluated using DFMA principles, involving component count analysis, manufacturing cost (DFM), and assembly efficiency (DFA). CAD software was used to model the design, and a prototype was built for functional validation. The results show improvements in design efficiency, including a 19% reduction in manufacturing costs, an increase in design efficiency from 6.55% to 7.25%, and a 23.56% improvement in cycle time efficiency. In conclusion, the application of VDI 2221 and DFMA successfully led to a more effective and efficient leak test machine design that meets automotive industry standards. Key word : VDI 2221, DFMA, leak test, differential pressure, HVAC Sistem pendingin kendaraan (HVAC) berperan penting dalam menjaga suhu kabin dan performa mesin. Salah satu komponen utama dalam sistem ini adalah tube, yang harus bebas kebocoran agar efisiensi sistem tetap optimal. Masalah yang diangkat dalam penelitian ini adalah keterbatasan metode water bubble leak test yang masih bergantung pada visual operator dan rawan kesalahan. Penelitian ini bertujuan merancang ulang mesin leak test dengan pendekatan yang lebih efisien dan sistematis. Metode yang digunakan meliputi observasi langsung di lini produksi PT XXX, analisis desain lama, dan perancangan ulang menggunakan metode VDI 2221 yang mencakup klarifikasi tugas, struktur fungsi, dan struktur modul. Setelah itu, dilakukan evaluasi desain dengan pendekatan DFMA melalui analisis jumlah komponen, biaya manufaktur (DFM), dan efisiensi perakitan (DFA). Perancangan dilakukan dengan bantuan perangkat lunak CAD dan simulasi prototipe juga dijalankan untuk validasi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan peningkatan efisiensi desain, seperti penurunan biaya manufaktur sebesar 19%, peningkatan efisiensi desain dari 6,55% menjadi 7,25%, dan efisiensi waktu siklus sebesar 23,56%. Kesimpulannya, penerapan metode VDI 2221 dan prinsip DFMA berhasil menghasilkan desain mesin leak test yang lebih efektif, efisien, dan sesuai standar industri otomotif.
