Abstract

This study aims to understand the process of self-disclosure among female users of the online dating application Bumble and to identify stages of digital interaction that are vulnerable to sexual harassment. A qualitative approach was employed using virtual ethnography, with analysis based on Altman and Taylor’s Social Penetration Theory, which includes four stages, namely orientation, exploratory affective exchange, affective exchange, and stable exchange. Data were collected through structured online interviews with informants who had experienced sexual harassment on the platform, as well as non-participant observation through the researcher’s direct use of the Bumble Date feature. The findings indicate that selfdisclosure occurs gradually and with careful consideration, yet harassment can arise at various stages of communication. Forms of harassment include sexually suggestive comments, explicit invitations, and requests for private photos that violate personal boundaries. Although Bumble is designed to give women greater control over interactions, incidents of harassment still occur, suggesting that digital safety features remain insufficient. This research contributes to the study of digital and interpersonal communication, particularly in understanding relational dynamics within online interaction spaces. It also provides practical implications for app developers to strengthen safety policies and enhance protection for female users on digital platforms.
