Abstract

This study explores the meaning of motivation in YouTube content using a semiotic approach and Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs theory. As an influential digital platform, YouTube provides various content that can motivate individuals in different aspects of life. Understanding motivation in digital media is crucial, as content consumption can influence how individuals fulfill their needs and shape their perception of achieving life goals. This study aligns with the research of Fadia Shafa Aurellie & Syahrul Hidayanto on motivational messages in the film CODA (2021), both employing a qualitative approach. The key difference lies in the object and method of analysis: CODA conveys motivation through social relationships using a narrative approach, whereas this study analyzes YouTube videos with Peirce's semiotic approach. Additionally, CODA covers the entire hierarchy of Maslow's needs, while YouTube videos emphasize self-esteem and self-actualization. These differences provide a new perspective on understanding motivation in digital media. This research employs a qualitative method with a semiotic approach to analyze symbols and signs in motivational YouTube videos. Data collection is conducted through the analysis of visual and narrative elements in videos containing motivational messages. This approach enables a deeper understanding of the construction of hidden meanings and how audiences interpret these messages in their daily lives. The findings reveal how motivational videos effectively construct the meaning of motivation in digital media while reaffirming the relevance of Maslow's theory in understanding motivational messages in the digital age. Penelitian ini mengeksplorasi makna motivasi dalam konten YouTube menggunakan pendekatan semiotika dan teori Hierarki Kebutuhan Maslow. Sebagai platform digital yang berpengaruh, YouTube menyediakan beragam konten yang dapat memotivasi individu dalam berbagai aspek kehidupan. Pemahaman terhadap motivasi dalam media digital penting karena konsumsi konten dapat memengaruhi cara seseorang memenuhi kebutuhannya dan membentuk persepsi terhadap pencapaian tujuan hidup. Penelitian ini sejalan dengan studi Fadia Shafa Aurellie & Syahrul Hidayanto tentang pesan motivasi dalam film CODA (2021), keduanya menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif. Perbedaannya terletak pada objek dan metode analisis: CODA menggambarkan motivasi melalui hubungan sosial dengan pendekatan naratif, sedangkan penelitian ini menganalisis video YouTube dengan pendekatan semiotika Peirce. Selain itu, CODA mencakup seluruh hierarki kebutuhan Maslow, sementara video YouTube lebih menekankan penghargaan diri dan aktualisasi. Perbedaan ini memberikan perspektif baru dalam memahami motivasi di media digital. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif dengan pendekatan semiotika untuk menganalisis simbol dan tanda dalam video motivasi di YouTube. Teknik pengumpulan data dilakukan melalui analisis elemen visual dan naratif dalam video yang mengandung pesan motivasi. Pendekatan ini memungkinkan pemahaman lebih dalam terhadap konstruksi makna yang tersembunyi dan bagaimana audiens menerima pesan tersebut dalam kehidupan sehari-hari. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bagaimana video motivasi dapat mengonstruksi makna motivasi secara efektif dalam format media digital, sekaligus menegaskan relevansi teori Maslow dalam memahami pesan motivasi di era digital.
