Abstract
This study discusses the phenomenon of using second accounts on Instagram by Generation Z as a medium for more private and personal self-disclosure. Second accounts are used to express emotions, share personal experiences, and seek social support without fear of negative judgment from a broader audience on the main account. Through a qualitative approach using Alfred Schutz’s phenomenological research methodology, this study examines the motives behind the use of second accounts, including because motives driven by past experiences and in-order-to motives focused on specific goals such as building emotional connections and exploring self-identity. The findings reveal that several factors influence users' levels of self-disclosure, such as group size, liking, dyadic effects, competence, personality, topics, and gender, as explained by Joseph De Vito. Informants creatively utilize Instagram features to support more closes interaction and strengthen emotional relationships. The use of second accounts also highlights how Generation Z constructs safe spaces in digital environments to express themselves and cope with social pressures in real life. Penelitian ini membahas fenomena penggunaan second account di Instagram oleh Generasi Z sebagai media pengungkapan diri yang lebih privat dan personal. Second account digunakan untuk mengekspresikan emosi, berbagi pengalaman pribadi, dan mencari dukungan sosial tanpa takut akan penilaian negatif dari audiens yang lebih luas di akun utama. Melalui pendekatan kualitatif dengan metodologi penelitian fenomenologi Alfred Schutz, penelitian ini mengkaji motif-motif yang melatarbelakangi penggunaan second account, termasuk motif karena (because motives) yang didorong oleh pengalaman masa lalu dan motif untuk (inorder-to motives) yang berfokus pada tujuan spesifik seperti membangun koneksi emosional dan mengeksplorasi identitas diri. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa beberapa faktor memengaruhi tingkat keterbukaan pengguna, seperti besar kelompok, perasaan menyukai, efek diadik, kompetensi, kepribadian, topik, dan jenis kelamin sebagaimana dijelaskan oleh Joseph De Vito. Informan memanfaatkan fitur Instagram secara kreatif untuk mendukung interaksi yang lebih dekat dan memperkuat hubungan emosional. Penggunaan second account juga memperlihatkan bagaimana Generasi Z membangun ruang aman di dunia digital untuk mengekspresikan diri dan mengatasi tekanan sosial di dunia nyata.
