Abstract
ABSTRACT Among the 34 provinces in Indonesia, 39.3% have been reported incidents of self-harm. In 2023, a trend emerged among young people called "Barcode," where individuals cut their arms in a way that resembles a barcode. The rise in self-harm cases can be triggered by various factors, and one explanation for why someone might engage in self-harm is alexithymia and emotion regulation. Therefore, this study aims to examine the relationship between alexithymia, emotion regulation, and self-harm among young adults. The research method used is quantitative with Spearman Correlation analysis. Sampling was conducted using nonprobability sampling which is snowball sampling and incidental sampling techniques, resulting in 278 subjects. Self-harm was measured using The Self-Harm Inventory (Sansone, Wiederman & Sansone, 1998), alexithymia was assessed with the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (Parker, Taylor & Bagby, 1994), and emotion regulation was measured using the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (Gross & John, 2003). The results of the study indicate a positive relationship between alexithymia and emotion regulation with self-harm in young adults, meaning that higher levels of alexithymia and poorer emotion regulation are associated with a greater tendency to self-harm, and vice versa.
