Abstract

Permainan video kini menjadi salah satu pilihan utama Masyarakat kontemporer. Tujuan penelitian ini untuk mengetahui cara game A Space for the Unbound merepresentasikan Mental Illness. Video games have now become one of the primary choices for contemporary society. What once had simple designs, storytelling, and gameplay, has now evolved into something much more complex. Research shows that video games can influence the knowledge, perceptions, and cognitive processes of players. This study aims to explore how the game A Space for the Unbound represents mental illness. This research employs a qualitative method with a critical paradigm. The object of study is the video game A Space for the Unbound, developed by Mojiken Studio. The data collected includes both primary and secondary data, which is then analyzed using Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis method, particularly the concept of the order of signification. Data analysis begins with organizing the data into linguistic messages, encoded iconic messages, and non-encoded iconic messages, followed by an analysis to identify the presence of any myths within the signs. The unit of analysis includes the visual and audio elements. The study finds that A Space for the Unbound represents mental illness through its narrative elements, gameplay, and symbolism in visual-audio. The game invites players to understand various mental conditions, depicting how individuals with mental illness often face negative perspectives and discrimination, highlighting that mental health issues are universal and uniquely experienced by each person. The study also reveals that the game initially builds certain myths, which are later deconstructed in the final scenes of the game.
