Abstract

The Joker film is a film directed by Todd Phillips, from the production house Warner Bros (DC Film) which was released in 2019. This film tells of the Joker who failed to become a comedian and ended up causing riots in Gotham city. This research was conducted to determine the representation of the meaning of the protagonist and antagonist characters in the joker character contained in the Joker film. This study uses two data, namely primary data and secondary data: the primary data used is in the form of visual scene cuts from the JOKER 2019 film which researchers have previously observed, and the secondary data used is in the form of books, magazines, articles or journals -journals, or previous research as a reference for this research. The research method used by researchers in this study is Charles Sanders Peirce's semiotic analysis method. This theory is a science or analytical method that examines signs. This theory uses the terms icon, index, and symbol. The results of this study are the description of the signs and meanings of the Protagonist and Antagonist in the Joker character, which can be seen from the signs and meanings through the scenes and dialogues carried out by the film actors. Some scenes have signs that can be interpreted, such as character traits, facial expressions, background, film color tones or film lighting, to properties used by film actors such as firearms, these are signs and markers that can be interpreted and associated with the meaning of the Protagonist. & Antagonists. Keywords: Representation, Antagonist, Protagonist, Joker, Charles Sanders Peirce's Semiotics Film Joker merupakan sebuah karya film sutradara besutan Todd Phillips, dari rumah produksi Warner Bros (DC Film) yang rilis pada tahun 2019. Film ini menceritakan tentang Joker yang gagal menjadi seorang komedian dan berujung dengan membuat kerusuhan di kota Gotham. Penelitian ini dlakukan untuk mengetahui representasi makna karakter protagonis dan antagonis pada tokoh joker yang ada terkadung dalam film Joker. Pada penelitian ini menggunakan dua data yaitu data primer dan data sekunder : data primer yang digunakan adalah berupa potongan scene yang bersifat visual pada film JOKER 2019 yang telah peneliti observasi sebelumnya, dan data sekunder yang digunakan adalah berupa buku-buku, majalah, artikel atau jurnal-jurnal, atau penelitian terdahulu untuk sebgai acuan dari penelitian ini. Metode penelitian yang digunakan peneliti dalam penelitian ini adalah metode analisis semiotika Charles Sanders Peirce. Teori ini merupakan suatu ilmu atau metode analisis yang mengkaji mengenai tanda. Teori ini menggunakan istilah ikon, indeks, dan symbol. Hasil penelitian ini adalah adanya gambaran tanda serta makna Protagonis dan Antagonis pada tokoh Joker terlihat dari tanda - tanda dan pemaknaan melalui adegan-adegan dan dialog yang dilakukan oleh para pemeran film. Beberapa adegan memiliki tanda yang dapat di maknai seperti sifat karakter tokoh, ekpresi wajah, latar tempat, tone warna film atau pencahayaan film, hingga property yang digunakan pemeran film seperti senjata api, hal ini adalah tanda dan penanda yang dapat dimaknai dan dikaitkan dengan pemaknaan Protagonis & Antagonis.
