Abstract

The purpose of this study was to find out whether there is a role of alienation as a mediator in the relationship between self-disclosure and social adjustment in new overseas students studying in Jakarta. Social adjustment is an ability that must be owned by individuals so that they are able to interact with the people around them, therefore, for new overseas students, the ability to make social adjustment is very necessary to deal with all the changes that occur in their new environment. Self disclosure which is a skill in communication that is done to express feelings or opinions to others. Alienation is an individual's feeling as if he is being separated from his social environment, so that the individual is unable to establish relationships with other people. The sample in this study were 359 new overseas students. The sampling technique uses Non-Probability with Accidental Sampling. Methods of data analysis using Simple Linear Regression and Regression Mediator F Hayes. The results obtained in this study are that alienation has a role as a mediator in the relationship between self-disclosure and social adjustment to new overseas students studying in Jakarta with a P-value of 0.000 < 0.05, a BootLLCI value of 0.3591 and a BootULCI value of 0.5559. Thus, the results of the data obtained have fulfilled the hypothesis proposed in this study. Keywords: Social Adjustment, Self Disclosure, Alienation Tujuan dilakukannya penelitian ini untuk mengetahui apakah terdapat peran alienasi sebagai mediator dalam hubungan antara self disclosure dengan social adjustment pada mahasiswa baru perantau yang berkuliah di Jakarta. Social adjustment merupakan kemampuan yang harus dimiliki oleh individu agar mereka mampu untuk berinteraksi dengan orang-orang yang berada di sekitarnya, oleh karena itu, bagi mahasiswa baru perantau, kemampuan dalam melakukan social adjustment sangat diperlukan untuk menghadapi segala perubahan yang terjadi di lingkungan barunya. Self disclosure yaitu suatu keterampilan dalam berkomunikasi yang dilakukan untuk mengekspresikan perasaan ataupun pendapat kepada orang lain. Alienasi merupakan perasaan individu yang seakan-akan dijauhkan dari lingkungan sosialnya, sehingga individu tidak mampu untuk menjalin relasi dengan orang lain. Sampel dalam penelitian ini sebanyak 359 mahasiswa baru perantau. Teknik pengambilan sampel menggunakan Non-Probability dengan Sampling Insidental (Accidental Sampling). Metode analisis data menggunakan Regresi Linear Sederhana dan Regression Mediator F Hayes. Hasil yang didapatkan dalam penelitian yaitu Alienasi memiliki peran sebagai mediator dalam hubungan antara self disclosure dengan social adjustment pada mahasiswa baru perantau yang berkuliah di Jakarta dengan nilai P-value 0.000 < 0.05, nilai BootLLCI sebesar 0.3591 dan nilai BootULCI sebesar 0.5559. Dengan demikian, hasil data yang diperoleh telah memenuhi hipotesis yang diajukan dalam penelitian ini. Kata Kunci: Social Adjustment, Self Disclosure, Alienasi
