Abstract

This research is based on the Netflix documentary entitled Abstract: The Art of Design episode Platon's Photography. In this documentary there are 14 episodes where each episode tells of an artist who is an expert in the field of design or art. In this research, the researcher chose the Platon's Photography episode because in this episode the researcher has concerns about photography essay which are rarely discussed and debated in the world of photography. The purpose of this research is to describe the meaning of photography essays in the documentary film Abstract: The Art of Design episode Plato's Photography. The theory used in this study is Stuart Hall's theory with a constructivist paradigm approach. The research method is Reception Analysis. Analysis of the Reception Study uses the criteria for reading media texts, namely Dominant Hegemonic Readers, Negotiated Readers, and Opposition Readers. Based on the results of the analysis and discussion of the meaning of the documentary film Abstract: The Art of Design episode Platon's Photography. In general the results of this research can be concluded that the audience's interpretation of the documentary film Abstract: The Art of Design episode Platon's Photography is in the dominant hegemonic position category. Key word: Photography Essay, Reception Analysis, Photographer Penelitian ini dilatarbelakangi dari film dokumenter Netflix berjudul Abstract: The Art of Design episode Platon’s Photography. Dalam film dokumenter ini ada 14 episode dimana setiap episodenya menceritakan seorang seniman yang ahli di bidang design ataupun seni. Dalam penelitian ini peneliti memilih episode Platon’s Photography karena dalam episode ini peneliti memiliki keresahan terhadap esai fotografi yang jarang sekali di bicarakan dan di perdebatkan dalam dunia fotografi. Tujuan penelitian ini untuk mendeskripsikan pemaknaan terhadap esai fotografi dalam film dokumenter Abstract: The Art of Design episode Platon’s Photography. Teori yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah teori Stuart Hall dengan pendekatan paradigma konstruktivis. Metode penelitian ialah Analisis Resepsi. Analisis Studi Resepsi menggunakan kriteria pembaca teks media yaitu Pembaca Dominan (dominant hegemonic position), Pembaca Negosiasi (negotiated position), dan Pembaca Oposisi (opposition position). Berdasarkan hasil analisis dan pembahasan pemaknaan terhadap film dokumenter Abstract: The Art of Design episode Platon’s Photography. Hasil penelitian ini secara umum akan dapat disimpulkan bahwa pemaknaan khalayak terhadap film dokumenter Abstract: The Art of Design episode Platon’s Photography, masuk kedalam kategori Dominan (dominant hegemonic position).
