Abstract

In this era, individual ways of socializing have been varied, a few years ago, people can only socializing directly until now socializing can also be done through social media intermediary, and instagram are social media with very high demand in Indonesia. This is what makes someone not hesitate to share some of the moments they are going through in the real life onto Instagram, whether their purpose is just to share some happiness until use this media as a place to earn income. This is also what allows users to see and even compare what they have and what other people have through Instagram. When a comparison has occurred, it is possible that the individual making the comparison will be influenced by himself and his thoughts which will also be related to his self-esteem. The aim of this research was to find out the relationship between social comparison and self-esteem among the instagram users. The research method used was a quantitative method with accidental sampling technique. Total number of participants was 105 respondents. There are 2 measuring tools used in this study, namely as the Rosenberg self-esteem scale (RSES) which consists of 10 statement items to measure the self-esteem variable. And to measure the social comparison variable, an adaptation of the Iowa-Netherlands Comparison Orientation Measure proposed (INCOM) is used which consists of of 11 statement items. Researchers used IBM SPSS Statistics 22 software to see the relationship between X and Y variables and also used the Pearson Correlation analysis. The findings obtained in this study is that there is a positive relationship between social comparison and self-esteem among the instagram users. Keywords: Self-esteem, Social Comparison, Instagram Users, Social Media Pada masa kini, cara individu untuk bersosialisasi sudah beragam, dari awalnya hanya melalui sosialisasi langsung hingga sekarang bersosialisasi sudah bisa dilakukan melalui sebuah perantara media sosial, dan Instagram merupakan media sosial yang peminatnya sangat tinggi di Indonesia. Para penggunapun tidak ragu lagi untuk membagikan beberapa momen yang mereka lalui didunia nyata ke dalam Instagram, baik tujuannya hanya untuk berbagi kebahagiaan, hingga akhirnya pun ada yang menggunakannya sebagai tempat mengais penghasilan. Hal inilah yang membuat antar pengguna dapat melihat bahkan membandingkan apa yang ia miliki dan apa yang orang lain miliki. Ketika perbandingan telah terjadi, maka kemungkinan individu yang melakukan perbandingan akan terpengaruh diri dan pemikirannya yang mana hal ini akan turut berhubungan dengan self-esteem yang dimiliki. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mencari apakah terdapat hubungan antara Social Comparison dengan Self-esteem pada pengguna Instagram. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah Kuantitatif dengan teknik accidental sampling, total partisipan yang digunakan sebanyak 105 responden. Terdapat 2 alat ukur yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini yaitu Rosenberg self-esteem scale (RSES) yang terdiri dari 10 item pernyataan untuk mengukur variabel self-esteem dan untuk mengukur variabel social comparison digunakan adaptasi dari iowa-Netherlands Comparison Orientation Measureproposed (INCOM) yang terdiri dari 11 item pernyataan. Peneliti menggunakan software IBM SPSS Statistics 22 dalam melihat hubungan antara variabel X dan Y serta menggunakan analisa Pearson Correlation. Temuan yang didapat dalam penelitian ini adalah terdapat hubungan antara social comparison dengan self-esteem serta diketahui pula terdapat arah hubungan yang positif.
