Abstract
Intercultural communication is definitely happening at Jakarta Brompton Owners Group Indonesia (BOGI) bicycle community, because of differences in cultural backgrounds in the communication process. When new members join BOGI Jakarta, they will experience culture shock because they are not familiar with the new environment and culture. The purpose of this research is to find out intercultural communication in the BOGI Jakarta bicycle community, and to know the supporting and inhibiting factors in conducting intercultural communication by members of the BOGI Jakarta bicycle community who have different cultural backgrounds. Gudykunst and Kim's intercultural communication model is used as a research theory. In this study the paradigm used is constructivism and using phenomenological method. The results showed that intercultural communication in the BOGI Jakarta community is influenced by cultural, sociocultural, psychocultural factors in which there are other factors. Environmental factors are not factors that determine intercultural communication. There are supporting factors for intercultural communication from the perspective of the communicator and the message. There are also inhibiting factors that cause intercultural communication not working optimally. Such as lack of social experience, language, inclination to judge, ethnocentrism and stereotypes. In addition, in dealing with culture shock, the informant will go through stages to be able to adapt, from the stages of contact, disintegration, reintegration, autonomy, until finally reaching the stage of independence and intensity. Keyword : intercultural communication, culture shock, community Komunikasi antarbudaya pasti terjadi di komunitas sepeda Brompton Owners Group Indonesia (BOGI) Jakarta karena perbedaan latar belakang budaya dalam proses komunikasi. Selain itu, terjadi culture shock pada anggota baru karena tidak terbiasa dengan lingkungan dan budaya baru. Tujuan dilakukannya penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui komunikasi antarbudaya di komunitas sepeda BOGI Jakarta, dan mengetahui faktor pendukung dan penghambat dalam melakukan komunikasi antarbudaya yang dilakukan oleh anggota komunitas sepeda BOGI Jakarta yang memiliki latar belakang kebudayaan yang berbeda. Model komunikasi antarbudaya Gudykunst dan Kim digunakan sebagai teori penelitian. Pada penelitian ini, paradigma yang digunakan adalah konstruktivisme dan menggunakan metode penelitian fenomenologi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa komunikasi antarbudaya di komunitas BOGI Jakarta dipengaruhi faktor budaya, sosiobudaya, psikobudaya dimana yang didalamnya terdapat faktor-faktor lainnya. Faktor lingkungan bukan faktor yang menentukan komunikasi antarbudaya yang terjadi. Selain itu, terdapat faktor pendukung komunikasi antarbudaya dari sudut pandang pelaku komunikasi dan pesan. Terdapat pula faktor penghambat yang menyebabkan komunikasi antarbudaya tidak berjalan maksimal. Seperti kurangnya pengalaman bersosial, bahasa, kecenderugan untuk menilai, etnosentrisme dan stereotip. Menghadapi culture shock, informan akan melewati tahapan-tahapan hingga mampu beradaptasi, dari tahap kontak, disintegrasi, reintegrasi, otonomi, hingga akhirnya mencapai tahap indepedensi dan intensitas.
