Abstract
This research was conducted to find out how audiences interpret racism as represented in the film Green Book. The presence of the Green Book in 2019 which brought the story of the true story of the friendship of Don Shirley and Tony Vallelonga. The film, which is set in the 1960s, shows the struggle of Don Shirley's component in changing the paradigm related to differences in skin color and fighting racism. The research method used is a qualitative method with a reception analysis approach. Data was obtained from FGD (focus group discussion) consisting of eight informants with the criteria of students of Mercu Buana University majoring in Broadcasting 2016, coming from ethnic Malays, Sundanese, Javanese, Lampung, Batak, Betawi, age 21-23 years. The results showed that in the Green Book film has racism messages, where the audience captures racism messages in the form of verbal and non-verbal implicitly and explicitly. White people in America are more dominant in all aspects of life and it is undeniable that racism is still often experienced by blacks of African-American descent. In this film also has a message how to respond wisely to acts of racism. Keywords: Reception, Audience, Film Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk mengetahui bagaimana khalayak memaknai rasisme yang direpresentasikan dalam film Green Book. Hadirnya film Green Book pada tahun 2019 yang mengangkat cerita tentang kisah nyata persahabatan Don Shirley dan Tony Vallelonga. Film yang berlatar belakang tahun 1960-an ini menunjukkan perjuangan komponin Don Shirley dalam mengubah paradigma terkait perbedaan warna kulit dan melawan tindakan rasisme. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah metode kualitatif dengan pendekatan analisis resepsi. Data diperoleh dari FGD (focus group discussion) yang terdiri dari delapan orang informan dengan kriteria mahasiswa/mahasiswi Universitas Mercu Buana jurusan Broadcasting angkatan 2016, berasal dari suku Melayu, Sunda, Jawa, Lampung, Batak, Betawi, usia 21-23 tahun. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa dalam film Green Book memiliki pesan-pesan rasisme, dimana khalayak menangkap pesan rasisme berupa verbal dan non-verbal secara implisit dan eksplisit. Kaum kulit putih di Amerika lebih mendominasi dari semua aspek kehidupan dan tidak dipungkiri bahwa tindakan rasisme masih sering dialami oleh kaum kulit hitam keturunan Afrika-Amerika. Dalam film ini pun memiliki pesan bagaimana menyikapi secara bijak terhadap tindakan rasisme. Kata kunci: Resepsi, Khalayak, Film.
