Abstract

This research was conducted to determine the effect of reading fiction on the empathy of disaster management officers. The research method used is a quantitative method with independent group pre-posttest experimental design. Sampling using purposive sampling technique. The initial sample size of the study was 120 disaster management officers in one central institution (70 men and 50 women). Participants were divided into two experimental groups and a control group. In the research process, 3 participants was eliminated, so the experiment was conducted on 117 participants. The experimental group as much as 59 people were treated to read fiction narratives and 58 control groups were treated to read news. Empathy variables are measured using an empathy scale that has been adapted and revised. The fiction reading variable is measured by a narrative transport questionnaire. The results of data analysis using the Independent Sample T-Test and Paired Sample T-Test showed that there were significant differences in empathy between the experimental and control groups. The experimental group experienced increased empathy after reading fiction. The results show that reading fiction can increase the empathy of disaster management officers in central institutions. Keywords: empathy, fiction, narrative transportion Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk mengetahui pengaruh membaca fiksi pada empati petugas penanganan bencana. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah metode kuantitatif dengan desain eksperimen independent group pre-posttest. Pengambilan sampel menggunakan teknik pursposive sampling. Jumlah sampel awal penelitian adalah 120 orang petugas penanganan bencana di salah satu lembaga pusat (70 orang laki-laki dan 50 orang perempuan). Partisipan dibagi secara acak (randomisasi) dengan menggunakan research randomizer ke dalam dua kelompok eksperimen dan kelompok kontrol. Dalam proses penelitian, 3 partisipan gugur, sehingga eksperimen dilakukan pada 117 orang partisipan. Kelompok eksperimen sebanyak 59 orang diberi perlakuan membaca narasi fiksi dan 58 orang kelompok kontrol diberi perlakuan membaca berita. Variabel empati diukur menggunakan skala empati yang telah diadaptasi dan direvisi. Variabel membaca fiksi diukur dengan kuesioner narrative transport. Hasil analisis data menggunakan Independent Sample T-Test dan Paired Sample T-Test menunjukkan terdapat perbedaan empati yang signifikan antara kelompok eksperimen dan kelompok kontrol. Kelompok eksperimen mengalami peningkatan empati setelah membaca fiksi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa membaca fiksi dapat meningkatkan empati petugas penanganan bencana di lembaga pusat.
