Abstract

Social skill is one of the key skills that kindergarten student needs to promote school readiness. Having social skill will optimize the students’ opportunities to get involved in learning and to manage the challenge that they meet at school. Past researches reported that Social story has been found effective to help children with special needs increase their social skill but there are still limited research in examining the effectiveness of social story in increasing normally developing chidren’s social skill. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the role of social story with positive reinforcement in increasing the social skills of kindergarten student. Social story with positive reinforcement is the reading of a story that is specifically made to help a child to handle specific social situation that the child encounter, with giving positive reinforcement aimed to increase the targeted behavior. This study used a single case design method with one respondent chosen by purposive sampling technique based on criteria given. The pre-test and post test evaluation of social skills are using Social Skill Improvement System-Rating Scale by Gresham & Elliot (2008). The evaluation of this study is also done by observing the frequency of targeted behavior before, during and after the intervention. The observation is done by event recording technique. The implementation of Social Story with positive reinforcement’s effectiveness is marked by the increasing post test scores of Social Skill Improvement System-Rating Scale on the targeted behaviors based on the participant condition and pre-test scores. In details, the increasing scores are from the targeted behavior on the engagement subscales from 44 to 62 or 18 points increments, on the communication subscales from 54 to 77 or 23 points increments and on assertiveness subscales from 22 to 59 or 37 points increments. The effectiveness of the intervention is also can be seen from the increasing frequency of targeted behaviors based on the observation of the frequency of targeted behavior before, during and after the intervention. The increasing behavior frequency in communication subscales is 66,7%, in engagement subscales is 72% and in assertiveness subscales is 81%. Key Words: social skills, kindergarten student, social story, positive reinforcement. Keterampilan sosial merupakan salah satu dari keterampilan kunci untuk kesiapan sekolah siswa TK. Memiliki keterampilan sosial akan memaksimalkan kesempatan anak untuk terlibat dalam belajar dan menghadapi tantangan yang ada di sekolah. Penelitian-penelitian terdahulu menemukan bahwa social story dapat meningkatkan keterampilan sosial pada anak dengan kebutuhan khusus. Namun penelitian social story pada anak tanpa kebutuhan khusus masih terbatas. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji peran social story dengan positive reinforcement untuk meningkatkan keterampilan sosial anak TK tanpa kebuthan khusus. Social Story dengan positive reinforcement adalah pembacaan cerita yang dibuat khusus untuk membantu anak agar berhasil menangani situasi sosial tertentu yang sering dihadapi oleh anak, dengan pemberian positive reinforcement yang berperan untuk meningkatkan perilaku. Dalam penelitian ini, peneliti menggunakan single case design dengan satu partisipan penelitian yang diambil melalui tehnik purposive sampling sesuai dengan kriteria partisipan yang ditentukan. Hasil penerapan intervensi dilakukan dengan mengkaji hasil pre-test dan post test dilakukan melalui alat ukur Social Skill Improvement System-Rating Scale dari Gresham & Elliot (2008). Hasil penerapan intervensi juga dilakukan dengan mengkaji data observasi frekuensi kemunculan perilaku sebelum, selama dan sesudah intervensi melalui observasi dengan tehnik event recording. Keefektifan penerapan Social Story dengan positive reinforcement pada penelitian ini ditandai dengan peningkatan skor hasil post test melalui alat ukur Social Skill Improvement System-Rating Scale pada target perilaku intervensi yang ditentukan berdasarkan kondisi partisipan dan hasil pre-test. Peningkatan skor nampak dari target perilaku pada subskala keterlibatan sosial dari 44 menjadi 62 atau sebesar 18 poin, pada subskala komunikasi dari 54 menjadi 77 atau sebesar 23 poin dan pada subskala asertif dari 22 menjadi 59 atau sebesar 37 poin. Peningkatan juga terlihat pada frekuensi target perilaku berdasarkan hasil observasi perilaku subyek di sekolah. Secara rinci, dibandingkan dengan baseline, peningkatan nampak pada subskala komunikasi (66,7%), pada subskala keterlibatan sosial (72%) dan pada subskala perilaku asertif (81%).
