Abstract

===Hot rolling is a metalworking process in which metal is heated above the recrystallization temperature to plastically deform it in the working or rolling operation. The hot metal is passed between two rolls to flatten it, lengthen it, reduce the cross-sectional area and obtain a uniform thickness. In the hot rolling mill process there are several types of defects and the dominant defects are determined such as under gauge, wrong cutting, wavy edge and out of flatness. This study aims to determine the main causes of defective products and make improvements to minimize these defective products. The method used in this research is the implementation of Six Sigma with the DMAIC method (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control). From the results of the analysis of defective product data, it was found that the main factors causing defects were Rolling mill, checking components that were not routine, and work procedures that were not applied. Then make improvements using the Design of Experiment (DOE). From the results of the Design of Experiment (DOE) experiment, the best combination was obtained in making improvements to reduce defective products. After making repairs and retrieving the data, the results of defective products were reduced from 2.95% to 0.60%, the results of DPMO (Defects per Million Opportunity) from 7377 to 1509 and the Sigma level increased from 3.94 to 4.47. The improvements made are proven to be able to reduce the level of defects and the proportion of defective products is well controlled.
