Abstract

The computer-related injuries were reported having high incidence among office workers who works daily with computer at their offices and did not practice good working habits. Because the affected workers will need medical leaves, hence the organizations will be at the disadvantage because of sickness absence that leads to decreasing work efficiency and extensive costs because of missing days of work. Obviously, it is important for this issue to be tackled. Thus, this study is carried out to assess the level of awareness of workstation ergonomics and its associations with sociodemographic factors and occurrence of computer-related injuries among office workers at Universitas Mercu Buana, Meruya campus, West Jakarta, Indonesia. This is a cross-sectional study of 120 office workers selected with simple random sampling method from various units at Universitas Mercu Buana. The independent variable is the socio-demographic factor that consists of workers’ age, sex, level of education, unit of work, duration of occupation, and duration working with computer daily at office. The dependent variables are workers’ level of awareness of workstation ergonomics and the occurrence of computer-related injuries. The data were obtained using a validated self-administered questionnaire. The bivariate and multivariate analysis were performed using the SPSS version 23 with a significance level set at 0.05. All participants are office workers and working with computer > 5 hours daily (100%). More than half participants are women (50.8%), aged 20-30 years old (56.7%), with bachelor’s degree (73.3%), duration of occupation 1-5 years (68.3%), and never attended any ergonomics training (87.5%). Most of participants had adequate awareness regarding workstation ergonomics (65%), however many of them still experienced computer-related injuries e.g. eye strain (78.3%), blurred vision (41.7%), watery eyes (39.2%), headache (37.5%), tingling and numbness of feet and hand (29.2% and 19.2% respectively). Assessment of body pain using Nordic Body Map showed that most of participants experienced pain on upper neck (44.2%), shoulder (40.8%), waist (40%) and lower neck (39.2%). Practice a good working habit is suggested and ergonomics training is highly recommended to all office workers at UMB in order to reduce the occurrence of computer-related injuries in the future.
