Abstract

Electroplating is a coating process using the principle of metal deposition by electrochemical reaction. The iron or steel specimen to be coated called as cathode, while the metal covering the workpiece is used as anode. The two electrodes are in an electrolyte solution and connected to one direct current power (DC). The electroplating process that has been widely used is barrel plating. Barrel plating involves the use of a cylinder that can hold a large volume of work while being submerged in a variety of process solutions called baths. Solderless terminal are connectors used in electrical equipment that use an electroplating barrel process to be corrosion resitant, resistant to oxidation and can conduct electrical current as well. Based on quality data on manufacture of solderless terminal for one year it was found that the dominant defect occurs in solderless terminal products is a change in color to yellowish. Analysis of cuases of yellowish with quantitatif methode used partial least squares (PLS) was carried out using parameters of chemical concentration, electrical current and operation time. Form analysis with smart-PLS it was found chemical concentration and electrical current used had a significant effect on yellowish (P-value is 0,002 dan 0,026), while operating time had no significant effect on yellowish (P-value 0,319). And then compare with qualitatif methode using focuss group discussion was found that the causes of yellowish defect due the chemical reaction process in the plating tank, and process after plating. Improvement was made by performed test run before daily production, changed the standard fequencies supply KOH and K2SnO3, changed the volume chemical additive, changed the type of filter pump and adjust the production sequence. After improvement, yellowish can decrease from 40,15% cases per year to 24,66% cases per year. Keywords : Electroplating, Partial Least Square, cacat, yellowish, parameter plating Electroplating adalah proses pelapisan menggunakan prinsip pengendapan logam dengan cara elektrokimia. Spesimen besi atau baja yang akan dilapisi dijadikan katoda, sedangkan logam yang melapisi benda kerja dijadikan sebagai anoda. Kedua elektroda berada dalam larutan elektrolit dan dihubungkan dengan satu daya arus searah yaitu DC Power Supply. Proses electroplating yang sudah digunakan secara luas adalah barrel plating. Barrel plating menggunakan silinder yang dapat menampung dalam jumlah banyak dan juga dapat digunakan pada berbagai larutan elektrolit. Solderless terminal merupakan konektor yang digunakan pada peralatan listrik yang menggunakan proses electroplating barrel untuk pelapisan permukaan agar tahan karat, tahan terhadap oksidasi dan dapat menghantar arus dengan baik. Dari data yang dikumpulkan pada perusahaan pembuat solderless terminal selama satu tahun ditemukan bahwa cacat dominan yang terjadi pada produk solderless terminal adalah perubahan warna menjadi kekuning-kuningan atau disebut yellowish. Setelah dilakukan analisis dengan metode kuantitatif partial least squares menggunakan smartPLS menggunakan parameter konsentrasi bahan kimia, arus dan waktu operasi, diperoleh bahwa konsentrasi bahan kimia dan arus yang digunakan berpengaruh signifikan terhadap yellowish (P-Value 0,002 dan 0,026), sedangkan waktu operasi tidak berpengaruh signifikan terhadap yellowish (P-value 0,319). Kemudian membandingkan analisis dengan metode kualitatif menggunakan metode focuss group discussion ditemukan penyebab cacat yellowish adalah karena proses reaksi kimia pada tangki plating, dan proses setelah pelapisan. Dilakukan perbaikan dengan melakukan test run sebelum produksi harian, mengubah standar frekuensi suplai KOH dan K2SnO3, perubahan volume bahan kimia aditif, perubahan tipe pompa filter dan mengatur urutan produksi. Setelah dilakukan perbaikan, yellowish dapat menurun dari 40,15% kasus per tahun menjadi 24,66% kasus per tahun.
