Abstract

The design of the West Kalimantan Regional Cultural Museum in Pontianak was motivated by the fact that existing museum facilities failed to meet the needs for preservation, storage, exhibition, and the development of visitor experiences regarding the region's rich culture. The cultural diversity of West Kalimantan— specifically Dayak, Malay, and Chinese cultures—forms the foundation for a museum design that serves not merely as a repository and exhibition space for collections, but also as a venue for public education and recreation. The project aims to create a design that represents the cultural identities of these three ethnic groups within a harmonious architectural whole while enhancing visitor comfort and experience. The design process involved data collection, literature reviews, precedent studies, analyses of activities and spatial requirements, site analysis, and the formulation of the design concept and final output. An architectural approach rooted in West Kalimantan’s local context was applied through the use of stilthouse forms, gable roofs, courtyards, natural materials, and symbolic ornaments that blend Dayak, Malay, and Chinese cultural characteristics. The spatial concept is designed as a narrative space featuring a linear circulation pattern and a "suggested approach" strategy; this guides visitors via signage, lighting, and object placement while allowing them the freedom to explore the space at their own pace. The resulting design integrates cultural exhibition, education, and recreation functions—along with supporting facilities—while responding to site conditions, the climate, the environment, and local identity. This project is expected to serve as a hub for the preservation and representation of West Kalimantan’s culture, while simultaneously fostering greater public appreciation for the region's diverse history and heritage. Keywords: Cultural Museum, West Kalimantan, Local Architecture, Dayak, Malay, and Chinese Cultures Perancangan Museum Budaya Daerah Kalimantan Barat di Kota Pontianak dilatarbelakangi oleh kondisi museum yang belum mampu memenuhi kebutuhan pelestarian, penyimpanan, penyajian, serta pengembangan pengalaman pengunjung terhadap kekayaan budaya daerah.
