Abstract
This study examines seniority-based cyberbullying practices in digital interactions between senior and junior students on TikTok among students of SMA Muhammadiyah 2 Tangerang. The study aims to identify the verbal and nonverbal communication forms used by senior students in cyberbullying, to reveal the culture of seniority and dominance underlying such practices, and to understand how perpetrators, victims, and bystanders construct meaning around them. A qualitative method with an ethnomethodological approach was employed, grounded in a constructivist-interpretive paradigm. Primary data were collected through nonparticipant digital observation of TikTok comment sections and live sessions, along with semi-structured in-depth interviews with purposively selected informants from three categories: seniors, juniors, and bystanders. Data were analyzed through condensation, display, and conclusion-drawing stages, with credibility ensured through triangulation, prolonged engagement, persistent observation, and member checks. The findings show that cyberbullying occurred through mocking and demeaning comments, which perpetrators justified based on personal judgment or influence from other users' negative comments, while victims responded differently, ranging from withdrawal to closing their social media accounts. Seniority status gave perpetrators a sense of entitlement to comment, while bystanders observed behavioral changes in victims after the incidents. The study concludes that seniority-based cyberbullying is a social practice constructed and normalized through micro-level digital interactions, rather than an isolated deviant behavior. Keywords: cyberbullying, TikTok, ethnomethodology, seniority, adolescents, social media.
