Abstract

Sibling rivalry is a common phenomenon that occurs in families, especially during adolescence when individuals are experiencing emotional development and identity exploration. This rivalry can appear in various forms, ranging from healthy competition to destructive conflict. One psychological factor that is assumed to influence this dynamic relationship is an individual’s ability to regulate emotions. This study aims to examine the relationship between emotion regulation and sibling rivalry among middle-born late adolescents. The participants in this study were 159 male and female late adolescents aged 15–21 years who reside in Jakarta. This research employed a quantitative approach with a correlational design. The sampling technique used was non-probability sampling. The instruments used in this study were the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ) and the Sibling Conflict Strategy Scale (SCSS), which had undergone validity and reliability testing. The results of the data analysis showed a significant negative relationship between emotion regulation and sibling rivalry. This means that the better the emotion regulation ability of middle-born adolescents, the lower the level of sibling rivalry they experience. Conversely, lower emotion regulation is associated with higher levels of sibling rivalry. These findings indicate that emotion regulation plays an important role in reducing conflict and competition between siblings during adolescence. Persaingan antar saudara atau sibling rivalry merupakan fenomena yang umum terjadi, terutama pada masa remaja ketika individu sedang mengalami perkembangan emosi dan pencarian identitas diri. Persaingan tersebut dapat muncul dalam berbagai bentuk, mulai dari kompetisi yang sehat hingga konflik yang bersifat destruktif. Salah satu faktor psikologis yang diduga berperan dalam memengaruhi dinamika hubungan tersebut adalah kemampuan individu dalam mengelola emosinya. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui hubungan antara regulasi emosi dengan sibling rivalry pada anak tengah remaja akhir. Subjek dalam penelitian ini berjumlah 159 remaja akhir laki-laki dan perempuan berusia 15-21 tahun yang berdomisili di Jakarta. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif dengan desain korelasional. Teknik pengambilan sampel dilakukan dengan metode non-probability sampling. Instrumen yang digunakan berupa skala Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ) dan skala Sibling Conflict Strategy Scale (SCSS) yang telah melalui uji validitas dan reliabilitas. Hasil analisis data menunjukkan adanya hubungan negatif yang signifikan antara regulasi emosi dan sibling rivalry. Artinya, semakin baik kemampuan regulasi emosi pada remaja anak tengah, maka semakin rendah tingkat sibling rivalry yang dialami. Sebaliknya, rendahnya regulasi emosi berkaitan dengan tingginya sibling rivalry. Temuan ini menunjukkan bahwa regulasi emosi berperan penting dalam mengurangi konflik dan persaingan antar saudara pada remaja. Kata kunci: regulasi emosi, sibling rivalry, anak tengah.
